Herb was a very special person who taught not just formally in the classroom, but through the examples he set with how he lived his life. To this day I think of him often and am grateful for the privilege of having known him.

Always Have You On My Mind. Rest In Piece

When I first started as a teacher at Medina, Herb was assigned as my mentor. It was one of the best things that ever happened to me. He was every bit as much a teacher to me as he was to his students. Much of whatever success I achieved over the years is do to him. He not only was helpful in explaining classroom management, and advising in methodology, but he taught me the importance of community involvement and being a child centered teacher/counselor/helper to the students. And much of the latter, he taught by example. For Herb always believed a teacher was more than just someone who taught a specific subject, but someone who helped nurture the children.

I had to leave teaching early to become a caregiver to my parents. Fortunately the Union was helpful in this because I was able to support myself with my sick leave. And I owe that to Herb also. For Herb was one of a handful of people who transformed the Columbus Education Association into a real union that was able to improve the wages and working conditions of all the teachers. And because of the size of the Columbus staff, it influenced school districts throughout central Ohio. He was a very special person who will truly be missed.
