Alice Appel Obituary

Gahanna - Alice Kay Appel (Brandt), a faithful servant of God, born in Versailles, Ohio on February 25th, 1948 to Emil William Brandt and Edith Caroline Brandt, entered eternal life on December 4th, 2025 after a short battle with cancer.

Among many other roles she played in life, she was a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, mother-in-law, sister-in-law and a steadfast friend.

She attended Capital University and graduated in 1970 with a bachelors in Education. During her time at Capital, Alice was a member of the Chapel Choir. She continued her education at The Ohio State University to complete her Master's of Education in 1975.

She was a dedicated educator for over 35 years. Alice's teaching career began in 1970 at Kae Avenue Elementary School in Whitehall where she developed friendships that have lasted 55 years. In 1978 Alice continued teaching in Gahanna Jefferson Schools at Gahanna Middle School West. There she served as an inclusion teacher, a trusted colleague and a lifelong friend, retiring in 2006 after 26 years of teaching service in the district. She continued to celebrate the relationships she built during her career and cherished her many friends.

She was a 54 year member of Faith Lutheran church in Whitehall Ohio. She served as a Sunday school teacher, secretary of the Church Leadership Team, sang in the church choir most recently on November 9th, played in the bell choir, taught summer Vacation Bible School and organized many Christmas play pageants.

Alice enjoyed traveling and seeing the world. She loved to spend time enjoying new places with family and friends.

Alice was an avid Buckeye fan for three decades, enjoying tailgating and cheering on the team with friends and family from the stands.

Alice is preceded in death by parents Emil and Edith Brandt, sister Ruth Ann Tetmeyer and brother-in-law, Donald Tetmeyer.

She is survived by husband David Leon Appel, by son Jeremy Davis Appel and daughter-in-law Sandra Appel, daughter Julie Allison Appel (Tim), grand-daughter Olivia Alice Appel, brother Allen Brandt, sister-in-law, Cathryn Brandt, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Faith Lutheran Church Whitehall or Faith Mission.

She will be deeply missed by many. A memorial will take place at a later date. Check legacy website for arrangement updates.

Alice was a beautiful lady who cared so much about everyone she met and the students she taught. I first met and served with her on the GJEA board. My heart goes out to her family; I send my prayers and condolences. May her memory be a blessing.

Dear Family, I just learned of your loss of Alice. I had talked with her earlier this year and she spoke of her family, Jeremy and Julie with pride, and how much she enjoyed retirement. Sending prayers of His peace and comfort to you all at this time.

Prayers for all of Alice's family during this difficult time. I appreciated getting to know Alice's through the Capital Alumnae group CUAC. She was a gracious and friendly spirit who always seemed to be smiling. She will be missed and remembered with fondness by many.

I first knew Alice when in my Sr. year at Cap. She and Diane lived down and across the hall from me in Schoedinger Setterlin and after Capital as the loving wife of my friend, David Appel. I always felt her loving, caring, compassionate character when in her presence and appreciated their acts of kindness when my husband, Gary, left this earthly life. May your family and all those who were touched by this dear woman of faith be surrounded by "The Shelter of Shalom". M.L. (Boies) Anderson

Rick & I are so sorry for your loss of Alice. My smart & beautiful 1st cousin who could sing like my Mother. She sang at my Mother´s Edith Stuck´s funeral in 1990. So beautiful! It is so shocking. God Bless.
