Eugenia "Jean" Bartels Obituary

Bradenton - Eugenia "Jean" Bartels was born August 16, 1925 in New York City to Jennie and George W. Shrader. She passed away peacefully on September 17, 2025 in Bradenton, Florida at the age of 100. Her daughter was at her bedside.

Jean met William B. Bartels, Jr. in New York on a blind date, a chance meeting that blossomed into a marriage of 67 years. Following World War II, the couple moved to his hometown of Columbus, Ohio, later settled in Riverlea in Worthington, and eventually retired to Bradenton, Florida.

Their partnership extended beyond their personal lives into professional endeavors. Together Jean and Bill built a successful independent insurance agency in the Clintonville area of Columbus. They were active members of North Community Evangelical Lutheran Church where Jean taught summer Bible School. Working side by side they served their community with dedication and integrity.

Jean and her husband were avid Ohio State University football and basketball fans. Both were excellent bridge players and solid golfers. Their love for travel took them across the United States and around the world.

Jean is survived by her daughter Barbara Bartels of Lake Barrington, Illinois; nieces Cathleen O'Halpin Rambo (Robert) of Marietta, Georgia; Cynthia Whyte and Kimberly Davidson (Steven) of Bensalem, Pennsylvania; and nephew John A. Whyte III (Kimberly) of Oakford, Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband William B. Bartels, Jr.; their son Poco (Kenneth) Alan Bartels; Jean's two sisters, Gloria Whyte of Philadelphia, PA.; and Carol O'Halpin (Brian) of Marietta, GA; and nephew LTC Michael O'Halpin, (Ret.).

A memorial service will be scheduled in Bradenton, Florida at a later date. Jean's cremated remains will be placed alongside her husband's in the Memory Garden at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bradenton, FL. Jean will be remembered for her engaging spirit, sharp intellect, generous heart, and unwavering determination. May her memory bring a smile to all who knew and loved her.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Association Appreciation Fund, 6406 21st Avenue West, Bradenton, Florida 34209 and Redeemer Lutheran Church, 6311 3rd Ave W, Bradenton, FL 34209.
