John Stevenson Obituary

STEVENSON John Leslie Stevenson, age 79, Worthington, OH, died on Monday, January 10, 2011 in Mt. Carmel West Hospital Palliative Care Unit due to end-stage Parkinson's Disease. John is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Catherine (McDermott) Stevenson; daughter and son-in-law, Candace J. and David Usher of Powell, OH; son and daughter-in-law, J. Mark Stevenson and Wendy L. Elcesser of Export, PA; granddaughters, Samantha S. Usher and Susan P. Stevenson; members of his extended family and numerous friends. Preceded in death by his first wife Jane (Baylor) Stevenson with whom he shared 29 years of happy marriage. John and Jane raised two exceptional children, Candace and Mark. John was born in Moline, IL to the late Leslie H. and Lillian H. (Peterson) Stevenson. John joined the Boy Scouts of America and attained the honor of Eagle Scout. John attended Iowa State University, Ames, IA. He continued his community service with membership in Alpha Phi Omega, the national service fraternity, serving as the Iowa State University chapter president in 1950. John also became a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. John received his degree in industrial economics in 1952. John joined the R.O.T.C. at Iowa State. Upon graduation, John became a Lieutenant in the US Army with the Army Engineers connected with the Air Force serving with the 808 Engineering Aviation Battalion in Okinawa, Japan. He completed his country's service in January, 1955. Retired Training and Safety Manager with 34 years service to AT&T having worked in Springfield, IL, Kansas City, MO, New York City and Worthington, OH. Life Member Telephone Pioneers. John's interests included music, photography, theater, making recordings, charity work, travel, computer and the internet. John Stevenson was a devoted and beloved husband, father and granddad. He was a gentleman with an outstanding sense of humor and a gracious spirit. John's family will receive friends from 2-4 and from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, January 21, 2011 at RUTHERFORD-CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, 515 High Street, Worthington, OH, where a Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, with a short visitation period to begin at 10 a.m. Donations may be made to The Salvation Army in Greater Columbus, 966 E. Main St., Columbus, OH 43205 or to The Mount Carmel Hospital Foundation, 793 W. State St., Columbus, OH 43222, in John's memory. When I think of John, I am reminded of the film "It's a Wonderful Life". John deeply affected and improved the lives of many who knew and worked with him. He was one of the 2 best bosses I've had in 40 years of working (or as John would say - "attending"). I'm going to miss him.
