HAVERHILL — Mrs. Irene (Mahelchek) Desmettre, 85, of Haverhill, formerly of Lawrence, died on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at Wingate at Haverhill.
Mrs. Desmettre was born in Lille, France, on June 16, 1924. She attended schools in France.
Irene was employed as a factory assembler before retiring. She loved knitting, traveling and cross word puzzles.
Mrs. Desmettre was the wife of the late Ernest Desmettre Jr. She is survived by her three sons, Alan Desmettre of Pelham, N.H., John Desmettre and his wife Leslie of Salem, N.H., and Daniel Desmettre and his wife Sharon of Haverhill; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 26, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen, MA 01844. Family and friends may call on Thursday, June 25, 2009 from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472. Although I didn't know her very well and my daughters will never get to know who would have been their great-grandmother, we are lucky to have little sweaters and blankets made by her over the years to remember her with. Whenever we see those things we will talk about where they came from and who made them and, in doing so, remember a small part of our meme and great-meme.

My time spend over the years with Irene was a priveledge, she was a very proud woman and a special friend -
we will meet again sometime for some shared memories and laughter.
