David Hoard Obituary

DAVID HOARD November 27, 1936 - MY 15, 2006 David Hoard died on May 15 in Oakland, California. David was born in Ithaca, New York on November 27, 1936, the eldest son of Professor James Lynn and Florence Hoard. David attended Ithaca High School, graduated from Antioch College, and received his Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of Pittsburgh in 1966. Soon thereafter he moved to Oakland, California, which he established as his permanent home. In 1968, David served as the Deputy Director of the Oakland Redevelopment Agency and then as Executive Director. He left the agency for a several year stint in real estate. Returning to public administration in 1995, David joined the staff at the City of Oakland's Community and Economic Development Agency (CEDA), where he managed projects such as the Oakland Ice Center. David found great satisfaction in community service, and enjoyed the many people he met and worked with during this time. David retired from the City at the end of 2004 and flourished in retirement. He enjoyed spending time with wife Adriana, traveling the world, playing a mean game of tennis, supporting the Oakland A's and going on long walks with his trusty dog, Jocko. David will be remembered by those close to him as kind, committed to his community and devoted to his family. He was an avid reader who had a competitive spirit and a wry sense of humor. David is survived by his wife, Adriana Giacomelli, and her children, George Goldman, Ryan Goldman, and Adriana Giacomelli. He is also survived by his children, Daniel and Eliza and their mother Dona Hoard. Also surviving David are his brothers, Thomas and Laurence, their wives Deborah and Patricia, his nieces, Laura and Sarah, and his nephew Cameron. A celebration of his life will be held on June 3 from 2p.m.-5p.m. at the Pacific Coast Brewing Company at 906 Washington St. in Oakland. Donations in memory of David can be made to Doctor's Without Borders, the Red Cross and Amnesty International.
