Robert McIvor Obituary

Robert R. McIvor
March 29, 1931 - January 2, 2021
Resident of Rossmoor ~ Walnut Creek, CA
Long-time East Bay orthopedic surgeon Robert R. McIvor, MD, passed away peacefully January 2, 2021, after a long illness. He was surrounded by his grandchildren and their partners, and his long-time assistant Gino Maningas. He was a resident of Rossmoor in Walnut Creek, after living for decades in Orinda, CA.
Dr. McIvor was born in Oakland in 1931 to Robert and Margaret McIvor, and attended Piedmont High School, where he was co-class president his senior year. He attended Williams College before transferring to Stanford University, and after graduation stayed on to go to medical school and orthopedic residency. An excellent athlete, he took up boxing while a medical student and used to sneak away from class to train, ultimately winning the San Francisco Golden Gloves competition.
After finishing his training, and a brief stint in the Army at Fort Ord in Monterey, CA, he moved to Santa Barbara, then back to Oakland to start his medical practice He married nursing student Loran Chandler, daughter of Dr. Loren Roscoe Chandler, dean of the Stanford Medical School, and they eventually had four children: Owen, Andrew, Doug and Wendy. The family made a home in Orinda, while Dr. McIvor worked long hours at three practices: Livermore, Lafayette (John Muir Hospital) and Oakland. He carved out time most days for a new athletic love, tennis. He joined the Berkeley Tennis Club and was still a dues paying member at the time of his passing. He was one of the best players in the state in the 1970's.
As time passed and his athletic pursuits left him with bad joints, he took up golf. He enjoyed many local outings with friends and golfers in and around Walnut Creek. Another mid-life interest was singing and acting. He took voice lessons and started his career with the San Francisco Gay Mens Chorus, and later was chosen for many minor parts in regional theater companies. He loved the old favorites like "Oklahoma" and "Carousel," and would often sing those standards around the house or while driving. He played the piano and sang at home, while Loran accompanied on the violin.
For a while he owned an alfalfa ranch in Fish Lake Valley, Nevada, and would drive a hay truck back and forth to supply Loran's horses with feed. If there was no help, he would load the flatbed truck by himself. Notoriously thrifty, he refused to upgrade his old truck, so broke down a few times, leading to different road adventures.
Even in his last years, he loved to go to the gym. When bad balance no longer allowed him to swing a golf club, he would still go to the local course in his golf cart. His motto of life was to "just keep on plugging."
Robert leaves behind his younger brother William, also a retired orthopedic surgeon, and sons Owen, Andrew, Doug, and daughter Wendy. His wife Loran died in 2002. He has five grandchildren and one great grandchild. There will be no service at this time due to the Covid pandemic.

"Dr. Bob" was an ever present member of the Verismo Opera ensemble and I have many fond memories of him singing with us. I am sorry to read of his passing but hope that he and another Verismo favorite bass Roger Smith are enjoying singing with the choirs in Heaven!

Dr, McIvor's dad was our family doctor. He delivered all four of us! Thereafter he acted as our pediatrician. I saw his dad into my early 20's. I met Dr. McIvor, the orthopedist, when I broke both my arms at the same time. His dad had set him up with an office adjacent to his on Pill Hill in Oakland. When I went to see his dad with my "problem" he said "you'll have to see my son across the hall." While Dr. McIvor, our family doctor was dapper and all business his son, the orthopedist, was decidedly more relaxed and led me to see the humor in my breaking both of my arms at once. I remember, in particular, him asking me which arm I would prefer go in a cast. I picked my right one since I was left handed. I will never forget Dr. McIvor's wry sense of humor and how it helped me get over the trauma of missing out on competitive swimming practice and swim meets way back then. My mom got the biggest kick out of how his dress shoes were covered in dust from plaster casts. Notably he put my cast on himself because at that time he ran his medical office by himself. I am happy that I had the opportunity to meet him.

Dr. McIvor was a very special man in my life.
I worked for him from 1978-2005. I first worked with him and his brother in Walnut Creek and then I ran his Lafayette office.
He was so much more than a boss to me, he was a friend, a mentor and confidant.
I have so many memories....too many to mention....
I remember to never put anything on his desk that any misspelled words , he would read a report and anything misspelled would jump off the page to him!
I remember his 4 children growing up, Owen and Andrew going into the medical field, Doug working on Diesel trucks, and I just remember Wendy as this beautiful young lady with the most beautiful blue eyes (just like her Father).
His wife Loran I remember always very nice and she seemed to enjoy life,
I remember her always smiling.
My youngest Son Ethan flew to Montana with Dr McIvor, my Son was visiting my Mother and Dr McIvor was visiting his wife Loran in Hamilton, my Son adored him, he enjoyed going to see Dr McIvor in his plays.
Dr McIvor enjoyed playing tennis to the extent that I had to schedule patients and surgery around his tennis, if he was in a tournament I always told him you better lose because you have a surgery this week!!!
I would love to visit him when I came to the Bay Area!, we had some great laughs!, we talked politics a lot, he was a great patriot.
It breaks my heart that he has passed
I loved him so, I will miss him dearly. God Bless you my dear friend

Dr. McIvor was my mother's orthopedist for many many years and made such a difference in her life. Not only did he provide excellent medical care, he shared a caring but no nonsense bedside manner which made her RA condition so much more bearable. They made each other laugh and he could always perk up her spirits even in the darkest times. I met with him frequently at her appointments and their repartee was so much fun.
What a wonderful man. He will be missed.
