Hollis Bascom Obituary

Hollis Hutchinson Bascom passed away peacefully on October 7th, 2015, at the age of 91 from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Hollis touched many lives as a thoughtful, kind and resourceful man. He had both a scientist's curiosity and an entrepreneurial spirit: intelligent, creative, and fearless. He looked for the next challenge, while caring for his family and others striving for a better life.
Hollis was born in Royal Oak, Michigan, the son of the late Glenn & Delcia Bascom. He graduated from Riverside (CA) High School and earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the UC Berkeley after serving in the Navy as an Ensign in the Pacific in WWII. Hollis completed a successful career as a manager with Coast Manufacturing before founding the ORCON Corporation in 1961. He held patents related to the company's manufacturing of carpet seaming and insulation films for the aerospace industry, products found on the Mar's Reconnaissance Orbiter and the International Space Station. Having served as CEO and President of ORCON, Hollis retired after 53 years.
Community-minded while residing in Livermore for sixty years, Hollis served as past president of the "20-30" service club, spearheaded fund-raising for Livermore/Pleasanton's Valley Care Hospital in 1956, and was elected first President of the Board of Directors of Valley Care Hospital in 1959. He worked to reengineer Livermore Sewers plan (1958) and the design of the Bothwell Center; organized East Bay real estate ventures and chaired Livermore's Building Bond Committee (1970).
Hollis is survived by his loving wife and companion of 36 years, Susan DuPree; his four children by Barbara Archer: Hollis Howard Bascom (Deanna), Sabrina Bascom (Mike), Allison Murphy (Patrick), and Grant Bascom; 7 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. His sister, Marian Jacks and many nieces and nephews and their families survive him. His brother, Liston Bascom, and sister, Jeanette Miller Jensen, predeceased him.
Hollis will be missed by his wife, his family and all who knew him. The family would especially like to thank Golden Hills Board and Care as well as the caring staff at Hope Hospice.

To Dr. Susan DuPree and family of Hollis Bascom.
Sorry for this loss. No matter how many years ago the departed will always remain in our hearts and memories.
Susan: really miss your guidance. Hope you are well.
Also my husband Ross passed away 1 yr ago, Sept 2020.
He fought so hard, however, he couldn't make it thru.

It has been our great privilege and personal joy to have known Hollis as a family member. We valued his quiet, understated, personality, strong but gentle, a brilliant man possessed with the greatest of humility. On behalf of the Staley family, Nancy and I wish to send our heartfelt sympathy to all of Hollis' family members, and to our niece, Susan, in their hour of loss. We shall all miss him greatly.
