Gregory Dodson Obituary

Gregory "Greg" A. Dodson, 45, of Erie, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 7, 2020 at his home.

He was born on August 19, 1974, son of Phyllis J. Henderson Dodson and the late Merle E. Dodson. Greg resided in Erie his whole life, graduating from Tech Memorial High School in 1993, and received an Associate's Degree from Erie Business Center. He was employed at Papa John's Pizza for many years, working in management and delivery driving over the years. Greg was an avid Denver Bronco's fan, and friends and family could always find him in a Bronco's jersey during football season. He loved karate, fishing and kayaking during the summer. He took a large interest in salt water tanks over the years, and was a magnet for all animals, especially dogs, who loved him just as much as he loved them.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Dodson, in infancy.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his brother, Ronald Dodson (Madeline), of North Fort Meyers, Fla.; and his sisters, Christine Dodson (fiancé Ryan Newara), and Sandra Eckman (Don), both of Erie; many nieces and nephews; and his good friend, Matt Nicholson and family.

Funeral services and burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery will be private.

Funeral arrangements were made by the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., Erie, 16504.

Greg and I met through Scouting and school. We spent so much time together through our school years. He was one the most genuine people I've had the privilege to know. Greg was loyal and passionate. He worked hard and played hard. He always gave his best to his job, while still keeping an eye on the future. I remember our Friday night routine was always bowling and stopping off to visit with Don, Sandy and DJ. The world is a dimmer place without him.

So sorry to hear about Greg. He was definitely too young for this. I was in Scouts with Greg for many years, and we had many great memories from our camp outs. Every Saturday, we would make "hobo dinners", wrapped in foil, and cooked over the fire. There was a certain way that everyone would wrap theirs up. But not Greg. I don't think he ever wrapped his like everyone else - he always came up with some different design. I can fondly remember one of his designs was in the shape of a bottle. His character always was welcome and I know that my Scouting experience would not have been the same without him. Rest in peace, my brother.

During my years as Cubmaster/Scoutmaster I had the honor/pleasure to have Greg as one of my Scouts. Greg was always there offering to help/pitch in anywhere you needed help. I'm sure his enthusiasm encouraged a lot of his fellow Scouts. At summer camp, one of his years, Greg wanted to work on Archery Merit badge. Being quite lengthy and involved to complete I suggested a less time consuming option. Greg said he really wanted to earn it, so I reluctantly agreed. Well, Greg being Greg , worked hard all week, putting in long hours at the Archery range and completed earning the archery Merit Badge and a few others I can't remember. In my 15 years as a Scout Leader Greg was the only Scout to complete Archery Merit Badge and did it in one week of Summer Camp. On our weekend campouts & summer camp we always had plenty of cut fire wood, thanks to Greg. Many times at dusk I had to ask him to stop cutting fire wood as it was getting too dark to be safe. Greg, being Greg, would ask if there was anything else he could do to help. A loss at too young of an age, these memories I'll never forget. Greg will surely be missed. My condolences to his mother, brother, and sisters.

This is so sad. Way too young to be taken away. Greg, it was a pleasure working with you over the years. Always on top of things. Always doing the right thing. May the forces of nature carry your spirit anywhere you wish. I will miss you deeply.

Greg and I were great friends during our middle and high school years. Although we went our separate ways after graduation, I will always remember the fun that we had collecting sports cards, riding trail bikes and just hanging out together. My deepest condolences go out to his family.
