George provided me with both mentoring large and small. For example, George enlightened me in the benefits that the basic tenets in colloid and interfacial chemistry would have for my future career with his courses and our research, a very big thing for me that I have been dedicated to my entire, now 40+ year, career. However, a little thing also deeply impacted me. We were moving our lab from the Nuclear annex, across the quad from Rhines Hall at UF, and I was carrying a bunch of stuff by hand. I approached the 2nd floor outside door, but the door was locked, this was a bit after 5PM. I pulled and pushed, but no movement, the stuff was slipping and I was getting desperate. I was getting desperate, but at the lest minute saw George walking out of his office to open the door for me. He shoved the glass to open the left hand door that was unlocked. George said that there were always alternatives to open doors, a metaphor that I took to heart. If you don't have a solution, look at the broader picture. This small thing has helped me immensely throughout my career as well. God Bless you George. Jim Adair

George will be greatly missed, especially his sharp mind and gentle wit. Each graduate student that he advised, he made them a better scientist by challenging them to think critically. George,Thank You.

George was the best possible advisor or me. Carol and George were a great team for our crew of graduate students. Not a day goes by that I do not use the lessons George taught. He has also been a friend for almost 30 years. I will miss his thoughtful advice and candid conversations.

I will miss George's intelligent, witty comments, and kindness. He was fun to be with and I always learned something from George. He had a way of being totally attentive when speaking to you, thus making you feel important. Whatever he undertook, George did it well.
