PHYLLIS LORMAN Obituary

PHYLLIS JEAN LORMAN, 97, passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, in Charlottesville, Va. The only child of Alice and Lester Webb, Phyllis was born in Indianapolis, Ind., on Sept. 15, 1923. Her happy early childhood in central Indiana and southern Illinois changed at age 11 with the death of her mother, and she went to live with her aunt in Indianapolis. Although this was a difficult time for her, she learned to make the best of the situation and developed those qualities that helped her throughout her life: independence, strong will, generosity, ability to make and keep friends, service to others, and love for her extended family. Through several moves and the death of her husband, and even as old age took its toll in recent years, Phyllis' good nature and positive outlook shined through. It was the fervent wish of her father that Phyllis graduated from college, and she was the first in her family to do so. She met her future husband, James G. Lorman, on her first day at Indiana University. Three months later on Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Jim was soon inducted into the Army and entered an accelerated medical school program, from which he graduated on the same day as Phyllis's graduation. They married four days later on Dec. 22, 1944. The early years of their marriage were marked by the shortages and inconveniences of the war, and then by Jim's deployment as an Army Physician in Korea and Japan for 17 months. When he returned, Phyllis, a friend and two of her aunts drove across the country from Indiana to meet his ship in San Francisco. Phyllis has said that reunion was without doubt the happiest day of her life. The subsequent decades, spent mostly in Fort Wayne, Ind., and Lexington, Ky., were filled with family, friends, volunteer work, church and extensive worldwide travel. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Fort Wayne for many years. Phyllis earned a Real Estate license at age 50, and practiced for over a decade. Her volunteer work included over 50 years as a team leader with Meals on Wheels. She was an avid reader and devoted to her daily crossword puzzle and long brisk walk. She is survived by her three children, Pam (Ben) Peternell, Cyndy (David) Martin and James (Anne Forbes) Lorman; five grandchildren, Andrew (Jamie) Peternell, Amy (Drew) Cummings, Mark (Sara) Peternell, Jeff (Aggie) Martin, and Robin (Carl Swanson) Forbes-Lorman); and 11 great-grandchildren. "Meemaw" will be greatly missed by all of us. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991. Phyllis will be interred at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Wayne; her life will be celebrated by the family at a later time. Charitable gifts in Phyllis' name can be made to the James G. Lorman Scholarship Fund, UK Office of Philanthropy, Sturgill Philanthropy Building, Lexington, KY 40506-0015.

Truly one of the kindest, most gracious people ever encountered. She was accepting of everyone, concerned and engaged in helping both individuals and organizations. Bright, charming and a companion to every generation, she was a delightful presence. I miss her still.

Pam, Cyndi and Jim,
Deepest condolences from the Williamson family. We just now learned of your mom's passing. We've thought of her often these past few years and wondered how she was but had no way to get in touch after she moved to VA. So many wonderful memories of the best family gatherings. The Fourth of July pool parties always featured bananas foster and sometimes your dad's favorite, "licorice ice cream with gooseberry sauce"! I remember delivering Meals on Wheels with your amazing mom one summer and visited her in KY. She also came to NC a few times and it was just great seeing her. Her laughter, kindness and positive spirit made her an absolute joy to be around. She was so very proud of all of you and spoke of you often in all of her correspondence. Our parents were great friends and we had so much fun growing up with all of you. We lost our dad, John, in 2013. Mom, Joan, will celebrate her 95th in July.
Holding you all in our hearts and very grateful for the time we shared. Love and prayers for God's deep, deep peace, Joan, Bob and Susie

Truly one of the kindest, gentlest souls I have ever known, she was the essence of warmth and generosity . Charming and engaging , she was able to relate to any generation on any level. A friend once described her as a genuine lady. She was that and so much more.

My parents, Jack and Helen Barch, were so fond of your mom and dad and were sad to see them leave when they moved to Lexington. I remember there were dinner parties and lots of fun. I have my own fond memories of a few occasions when my whole family was invited over to the Lorman's to swim. I can still clearly picture your mom, a very cheerful, kind and gracious lady. Both of your parents were - and I know they are dearly missed. My folks both passed away in 2009. My deepest sympathies on your loss.

Pam, Cindy, and yes . . You will always be Jimmy to me . . . Sincere condolences on the loss of your mom. Our childhoods blended on many occasions - swimming at your house in Kirkwood Park, picnics at Franke Park, and innumerable trips to activities at First Pres . . . Our fathers dedicated to their careers at Fort Wayne Radiology . . . Lots of fond memories. Our parents are both deceased as well, and last August, Donna passed away from pulmonary problems. That was really tough! Hope you three remain close even though geography may separate you. My sibs and I are blessed to have each other as good friends along with wonderful memories like the ones we shared with you growing up in Ft. Wayne.
