Edenia Guillermo Obituary
Edenia Guillermo, 86, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, in Florida, of heart complications.
Dr. Guillermo, of Lake Worth, Fla., served as a professor of Spanish at Hood from 1974 to 1983. A prize endowed in her honor is awarded each year to outstanding Hispanic seniors who have taken some course work in Spanish at Hood.
A native of Cuba, Dr. Guillermo earned a doctor of education degree summa cum laude in 1939, and a doctorate of philosophy and letters in 1949 from the University of Havana. She moved to the United States in 1961 and in 1969 became a U.S. citizen.
Dr. Guillermo taught in Cuba for many years and served as director of education, state superintendent, of the Province of Havana. From 1956 to 1960 she was also a lecturer and assistant director of "The University of the Air," a weekly radio and television cultural program in Havana.
Prior to coming to Hood, she taught at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Ill. She also taught at colleges in Costa Rica and Mexico, and at high schools in Wyoming and Pennsylvania.
Dr. Guillermo authored and co-authored several books and was the recipient of three literary prizes. She also published numerous essays and articles in magazines in Cuba, Spain and the United States.
Dr. Guillermo served as a consultant to several groups, including the Maryland State Department of Education and the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, N.J. In 1976, she was one of 19 people selected by the U.S. Department of Education to participate in a Scholar Diplomat Seminar on Latin American Affairs.
Highly regarded in the field of education, Dr. Guillermo had been listed in "Who's Who of Women" and "Director of American Scholars."
Survivors include two children Jorge Guillermo and Gilberto Perez; and several grandchildren.
