Kevin Collins Obituary

COLLINS

KEVIN MICHAEL age 69, passed away suddenly at his winter home in Naples, Florida on February 20, 2016, surrounded by loved ones. Kevin was born on August 4, 1946 in Springfield, Massachusetts to Michael and Virginia (Munyan) Collins. After a stellar schoolboy athletic career at Springfield Technical High School in Massachusetts, Kevin accepted an offer from the New York Mets and for the better part of the next ten years, played professional baseball. He was a hard-nosed, steady utility player for a number of teams including the Detroit Tigers and the Montreal Expos. While with Montreal, he hit the first ever pinch-hit home run for that organization. Kevin played baseball at a time when a player's salary was about the same as a teacher or police officer; a time, as he used to say, when baseball was simply "about a ball, a bat and a glove". When he finally hung up his cleats, he had no complaints, and no regrets. "I was a guy who played the game the right way," he said in an interview once, "Nobody ever had to tell me how to compete. I… gave you all I had, whether or not that was enough". In his youth, he benefited from his local Boys and Girls Club and later went on to devote much of his time and abilities to that organization. In 1974, he left baseball to settle with his young family in the metro Detroit area and took a job with Summa-Harrison Metal Products and then later with Mexican Industries, an auto parts supplier in southwest Detroit. Kevin continued to share his love of the game with talented young ball players. As the Head Coach and Player Manager, Kevin competed in the Detroit Federal League as well as the Pontiac Men's Class A League gaining local, regional and national attention year after year at the AABC Stan Musial World Series. Kevin had a passion not only for sports, but also politics and current events and was always up for a lively discussion. His smile and engaging nature always made you feel like you were a lifelong friend. He was always ready, too, to tell a good story or share advice if asked, and you could always count on his use of "colorful" language. Kevin never met a dog he didn't like and was always at the ready to lavish them with love and treats. He cherished his family and friends and there was no one he loved more than his three devoted grandchildren. If you were lucky enough to rub shoulders with Kevin Collins, there's no doubt that you were better for it. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his in-laws, Armand and Eileen (Webb) Laflamme. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Marie (Laflamme) Collins, who he met at age 17 on the day he signed his first major league baseball contract and with whom he recently celebrated his 48th wedding anniversary. He is cherished and survived by his two children, Michael (Kirsten) Collins and Kelly (Keith) Binkowski, both of Michigan, and leaves behind his three biggest fans, grandchildren Joseph Binkowski, Katherine Binkowski and Lucas Collins. He also leaves behind his two sisters, Nancy (John) Pollard and Kathleen (Ralph) Disa, and sister-in-law Ann (John) Komer, of Massachusetts. He will be celebrated and remembered by all who knew him, including his nieces, nephews, godchildren and countless friends and extended family. A Celebration of His Life will take place on March 10, 2016 from 5-9 p.m., with a Remembrance at 6:30 p.m. at Club Venetian, 29310 John R, Madison Heights, MI. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Royal Oak Boys and Girls Club, 1545 East Lincoln, Royal Oak, MI 48067.

I am greatly saddened by news of Kevin's passing and so sorry to be learning of his death only now. I will always cherish the kindness Kevin showed me when he was a counselor at Boys Club camp in Brimfield and again during our year together at Tech. He had a special touch and went out of his way to boost my self-confidence. I looked up to him and am forever grateful to have known and been influenced by such a special person. Please accept my belated but sincere condolences on your loss, and take comfort knowing that I remember his kindness and goodness even these 50-plus years since being around him.

Kevin and I grew up together on Catalpa terrace in Springfield. I lived across from him and we were best friends until my family moved to Connecticut and we lost touch. I had looked for him a few times as I grew older but never found any contact information until today when I discovered he passed in 2016. I am so sadden by this news. He was a great friend. RIP Kevin and my condolences to his family.

I just found out today that Kevin had passed away almost two years ago. I worked with Kevin in Hazel Park, Mi back in 1974-5. I was quite a bit younger then Kevin and he was of course a former major league ballplayer. Never the less he could not have been a better friend a mentor to the fresh faced kid I was at the time. Thanks for all the great memories old friend and RIP.

I was known as BOB'S brother Howie, Mush lawlor and Frank Page or any one else who had car, would bring me to the games. I became the ball shagger. Kevin was over our house alot, he was always doing something to make me laugh. I will never forget the time I went to Shea Stadium to watch him play what a thrill. I was always asking BoB how Kevin was doing. My condolences. Jim Montagna

Stunned and sadden at news of KC passing. If every there was a model of boy next door makes good/ all-American hero, Kevin was that in my eyes. He truly lived out dreams of all those who played sports along side of him. I played high school( tech 63) and legion baseball with KC, and when I pitched , was great to see Kevin at shortstop, fielding every ball on left side of field. Since we both dated cheerleaders, we often doubled dated in my 57 Chevy. Always followed his career with great interest, knowing he worked hard to go along with his fabulous athletic ability. My condolences to his family, a true loss, a void in our hearts, will be greatly missed by all who lives he touched.
Batter-up, Casey.

I was saddened to learn of Kevin's passing. I knew him both from playing ball with gateway hardware and from tech where we were classmates. It's funny that the mind has no sense of time in that I remember him clearly after 50+ years ( ugh)....he was a class act then which obviously was in his DNA throughout his life. It was really special to have known him. My condolences to his family

Was lucky enough to meet Kevin at the Detroit Tigers reunion in Lakeland, Fla., in 2013. At the next reunion coming up next week, Kevin will be remembered and missed

March 4, 2016

Kevin was my first friend. We both lived on West Alvord St, our parents were friends and our moms had us playing together when we were 1-3 years old. We moved off the street when I was 3-4 and I think we met up again for a short time at White Street School. I have memories of seeing Kevin occasionally when our parents may have been getting together. After that, like many others, I admired his successes on the field and court from the stands and could only wish I had his athletic ability. I remember his father Mike who was a great and genuine guy and always made a big deal out of seeing me as I was growing up. I saw Kevin ten or more years ago around Thanksgiving at the Fort. He greeted me as if we had remained close friends for all of those years since West Alvord. Sorry for your loss. Kevin was a great slice of Springfield.

Linda, Nancy and Kathy:
I was so saddened to learn last week of Kevin's passing. Some of my earliest memories involve him. I lived on West Alvord St.two doors down from you and Kevin. He and Michael Jennings ( who lived in the house between yours and ours) and I were pals and hung out together before you moved out to Catalpa Ter. Its funny the things that stick with you after more than 60 years. There was one of those green wooden city sand boxes on the little island where West Alvord and Daviston Streets come together. That became our "stage coach" when we were 6 or 7 years old. We would climb up on it with our cap guns and wearing our cowboy boots and fight off the "James Gang" that was trying to hold us up. Kevin and I were also classmates at Tech High several years latter. When I passed the sad news on to a few of our classmates that I have served on out last three highschool reunion committees with, one of them remembered him as "The All American Boy, handsome, athletically talented, popular and nice to everybody" She spoke for everyone who knew Kevin when she said that. My wife Paula and I send our deepest sympathy to all of you. . Having recently lost my own brother Jimmy in January, I know how difficult a time this is for you. Eddie Collins
