JOSIE MONIS BURRISS

Josie Burriss, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at the age of 83. The daughter of Jennie and Frank Monis, Josie was born and raised in Fowler, CA. Josie was a teacher in Fresno Unified School District for over 30 years. She taught English at various middle schools including Tenaya, Fort Miller, and Tehipite. She retired in 1990, from the Professional Development Department where she trained many of Fresno's teachers in the strategies needed to teach their ever growing population of English Language Learners. She made her most meaningful and amazing impact in retirement, by simply being "Grandma". She thri-ved in this role and built strong connections and lasting memories with her grandchildren, supporting them in their many endeavors. She was the pillar and support pulling her family together to celebrate and recognize traditions. She will be remembered for her love of her family, the friendships she developed and maintained throughout all aspects of her life and her ever present and mischievous sense of humor. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Merlyn Burriss. Josie is survived by her son, Randy Burriss and wife Melody; her daughter, Judy Howell and husband Rich; grandsons, Kevin, Jordan and Justin Burriss; granddaughters, Lauren and Katie Howell; sisters, June Kahaian and husband John, and Beverly Ruby and husband Jeff; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
