LAURENCE STABLER Obituary
JANNEY 'JAN'
Laurence Janney Stabler, Jr, 92, of Gainesville, FL, passed away peacefully on 1/5/19. He was also known to friends and associates as Jan or Larry. He was preceded in death by his first wife Helen, his son David, his sister Helen, and his brother George. He was survived by his daughter Anne, his second wife Karen (separated), his brother Tom, and his brother James.
Jan was raised in a family and community of Friends (Quakers) in southeastern Pennsylvania. As a Quaker, he could not bear arms, so he joined the Merchant Marines. Fortunately, the war ended when he shipped out. This was an enriching experience because he travelled the world. Upon returning home, he earned a BS in engineering from Swarthmore College. He had several careers, for example building contractor, industrial and residential real estate, and manufacturing communication equipment.
Jan loved music, especially opera, bagpipes, and Ragtime. He loved art, especially the Impressionists. His favorite sports were curling and scuba diving. He was a member of the Barnacle Busters dive club in Gainesville, where he met his second wife Karen. Jan was very talented and skilled with his hands. He could build anything with wood, metal, and stone.
A memorial will be held on Saturday, 1/26/19 at 11:00am, at the Gainesville Quaker Meetinghouse, 702 NW 38th St., in Gainesville. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.

We are so sad to hear of Jan's passing. We met him 34 years ago in the Barnacles Busters Dive Club-when we joined- where he served as Treasurer for as long as we can remember. We've been missing him lately at the meetings-it was difficult to drive at night for him, but he would still try and make the meetings.
He is missed, but will always be remembered.
Our condolences to Anne- hope you keep in touch.
