I remember Sen. Kraus for his successful fight to make wearing seat belts mandatory. It was an honor for me in 1990 to campaign for his State Senate seat. RIP Senator Kraus.

It's a rare thing in public life to find someone who combines intellect, integrity and independence. That was Dick Kraus. During the decades I knew him I fondly considered him to be annoyingly principled. He never took the easy or politically expedient path. He did what was right. Our condolences to Pat and his family for the loss of a husband, father and our good friend.

I was so sorry to hear the sad news of Dick's passing. He was one of the finest public servants ever to grace the halls of the Massachusetts State House. A true gentleman, generous of spirit, a gargantuan intellect, and always motivated by the better angels of our nature.
Working with him on education reform in the 1980's was an absolute joy. He had a wonderfully dry sense of humor combined with the patience of a saint.
Though I haven't seen or spoken to Dick in years, the news of his passing brought back a rush of fond memories. Such was the quiet but profound impact he had on all the lives he touched in his amazingly consequential personal and professional life. He will be sorely missed.
My wife Patti and I send our heartfelt condolences to my former colleague Pat Fiero as well as to all of Dick's family and friends. If there was ever a life to emulate and venerate in these terrible times for public service, it would be Dick's. RIP old friend. -Nick Paleologos
