Werner Aissen Obituary

Aissen, Werner Hermann

Werner Hermann Aissen, 78, of Green Bay, WI loving husband to Marlene Aissen, passed away peacefully at home on June 11, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on March 12, 1936 in Wilhemshaven, Germany to the late Hermann and Herta Aissen. After graduating from eighth grade, Werner entered a plumbing apprenticeship. In 1955, Werner made his way to the United States where he quickly learned English, eventually sponsoring his three younger sisters and widowed father to emigrate from Germany.

He had a deep appreciation for his adopted country and entered the United States Army in 1956.

On May 14, 1960, he married Marlene E. MacBride at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Marinette, and they recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.

Werner was also a licensed plumber who worked with various mechanical contractors in the area and later became the Manager of Mechanical Systems at St. Norbert College where, after 15 years, he retired. He was a proud member of Local Union 298/Local 400, the United Association of Plumbers and Steamfitters Union.

Proud of his homeland, Werner was a founding member of the German American Society of Green Bay, where he organized countless Oktoberfests and Fasching Balls. He was also a member of the German American Club of Central Florida and the Niedersachen Club of Chicago. Werner enjoyed games of Sheepshead with his family and was a devoted Green Bay Packer fan. Werner was a member of the Northeast Wisconsin Accordion Club and the Northeast Wisconsin Concertina, Accordion and Button Box Club, and he entertained at German activities, family celebrations and for the Christmas shoppers at the Aissen Tree Farm.

In retirement, Werner could be found working in his beloved garden, hunting, playing golf, or planning his next trip to Germany. Werner enjoyed time with Marlene at their cabin in Crooked Lake, WI as well as later in Leesburg, FL at their second home during winter months.

Werner was preceded in death by his parents, Hermann & Herta Aissen; his much loved stepmother, Myrtle Aissen; his sister and brother-in-law, Edith & Hans Rolf van Vorshelen; aunt Theresa Schmidt; and niece Kathryn Anderson. His legacy will be long cherished by his loving wife of 54 years, Marlene, his children and spouses, Pamela Aissen, Jeffrey and Tammy Aissen, Lori Aissen, and Kurt and Shannon Aissen. He leaves behind ten grandchildren, Phillip & his wife Megan, Amanda, and Shane Passamoni, Skyla and Garrit Aissen, Libby and Conrad Schmidtman, and Caroline, Graeme and Lila Aissen as well as one great grandson, Coltyn Feld. His sisters and brothers-in-law Ilse and Bill Weitz and Margot and Robert Anderson; sister-in-law and husband LaRonde and Robert Zylkowski, and many nieces & nephews survive him. In addition, Werner leaves behind many relatives and friends in The Netherlands and Germany.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 16, from 4-8pm at Cotter Funeral Home, 860 N. Webster Ave., DePere, WI with a prayer service at 7:00p.m. with Deacon Jerome Tetreau presiding. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, at 10:30am at St. Norbert College Parish at Old St. Joseph Church in De Pere with the Rev. Richard Getchel officiating. There will be no visitation prior to the Mass on Tuesday. Online condolences at www.cotterfuneralhome.com

The family wishes to thank Dr. D. Groteluschen and the staff of St. Mary's Green Bay Oncology, the staff of Unity Hospice, and relatives and friends for their care and support during Werner's illness.
