Michael Ariens Obituary

A man who loved his family, golf, ice cream, asparagus, running marathons and reading Russian history, has gone to join Paul, Tom, and Margaret, and others who have gone before him, to that peaceful place promised by Jesus.

Michael S. Ariens, 83, loving husband of Mary "Mimi" Murphy Ariens for 58 years, died at home in Brillion Saturday, Feb. 28 after a brave and courageous battle with cancer.

Michael was born August 16, 1931 in Oshkosh, the second son of Mando "Steve" Ariens and Kathryn "Sally" Green Ariens. Mike attended St. Mary's grade school and at age 14 played the piccolo for the Brillion city band. A 1949 graduate of Brillion High School, Michael attended St. Norbert College and is a 1954 graduate of MIT. Following military service at Fort Leonard Wood, KS, Mike and Mimi married on August 11, 1956 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Green Bay. Michael obtained his MBA from Indiana University in 1957 and began work at Cummins Engine in Columbus, IN.

The family returned to Brillion in 1959 where Mike began a 55-year career at Ariens Company. At the time of his death, he was Chairman-emeritus.

In addition to his wife, Michael is survived by five sons: Michael (Renee) of San Antonio, TX, Daniel (Julie) of Green Bay, Peter (Didi) of Jasper, IN, Christopher (Israel Duran) of New York City, Andrew (Brooke) of Western Springs, IL; and three daughters: Margaret Denten (Martin) of Mt. Prospect, IL, Kathryn Martell (Michael) of Burlington, and Mary Dellanina (Emo) of Mt. Prospect, IL; 22 grandchildren: Stephanie Soto (Jose), Nicholas Ariens (Elizabeth), Daniel Ariens II, Caitlin Ariens, Stephen Ariens, John Ariens, Meghan Martell, Emily Dellanina, Elise Ariens, Elizabeth Martell, Maria Dellanina, Michael Martell, Annie Ariens, Claire Ariens, Julia Ariens, Joseph Dellanina, Olivia Ariens, Molly Denten, Liam Denten, Jack Ariens, Chloe Ariens and Michael S. Ariens III, named for his grandfather; one great-grandchild, Henry Ariens, who is named for his great-great-great-grandfather; and two brothers, Patrick (Maryann) of Queensland, Australia and Stephen (Lynn) of Portland, OR. Michael was preceded in death by his son, Paul, his youngest brother, Thomas, and his sister-in-law Margaret Murphy.

A business and civic leader for much of his life, Mike was a board member at Wisconsin Public Service, Schneider National, U.S. Oil, Relevant Radio, Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, Calumet County Bank, and Calumet Medical Center. Mike is a past member of professional organizations OPEI, YPO, CEO, and WPO. A former trustee at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and St. Norbert College, where, in 1991, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters, Michael and Mimi are members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. A founder of the Cursillo movement in 1965, Michael was active in Legatus, made an annual spiritual retreat to the Jesuit Retreat House in Oskhosh, and took part in a yearly couples retreat led by Bishop Robert Morneau at Chambers Island in Door County and served on the finance council of the Green Bay Catholic Diocese. Mike and Mimi have devoted much of their lives to Catholic education.

Funeral Mass will take place at 12:00 p.m. NOON on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Holy Family Parish, 1100 West Ryan Street in Brillion. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be Rev. Timothy Brandt. Burial will take place in Holy Family Parish Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church Friday evening, March 6 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A family remembrance service will conclude the evening.

Visitation will continue on Saturday morning at church from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Holy Family Parish, Brillion, St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter, Knights for Life at St. Norbert College, or the charity of your choice.

A special thanks to Bonnie of Nurse Next Door and Unity Hospice for their loving, compassionate care.

for Michael Ariens

Not sure what to say?

February 23, 2023

It's hard to believe that Michael had been among the heavenly host now for several years. The energy of his smile and laugh still abide in may memory and the gift of friendship, that he and Mimi shared with me during our time as trustees for SMWCollege lives on in my heart. Peace and love, Sr. Cathy Campbell,SP

How ironic that this additional comment was just added to Mike's guest book. It reminded me that I wanted to say how much we appreciated the laminated remembrance bookmark & it is always in the book I am currently reading. His smiling face & the verse are an inspiration.

Dear Mimi and Family,
Please accept my sincere condolences regarding your loss. My late husband Orville enjoyed over 30 years at the Ariens' Company and his many years there brought him much joy and satisfaction. Thank you for everything that Mike and the Ariens' Company brought into our lives. You are all in my prayers.

March 14, 2015

Dear Mimi and Family,
We were so very saddened to hear of Mike's passing. We know Mike meant so much to our late father, Orville Woldt, as did the many years our dad worked at the Ariens' Company. Our father was always grateful for the faith that Mike had in him and the opportunities that the Ariens' Company provided him, and even mentioned his gratitude in the last words he wrote that were spoken at his funeral. Our hearts go out to you and your family during this time. Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Mimi and Family,

Condolences to you on the loss of Mike. I remember him as an intelligent, kind and compassionate soul who loved his family and community. Mike drove us to High Cliff for the Klondike Derby for Scouts as well as swimming in Chilton before Brillion had a pool.I remember him on snowmobiles, running (and always being asked if he needed a ride!), and always driving his and everyone else's kids to church or some school event. He was kind to speak to any audience, be it the BHS Honor Society (his topic -Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance) in Potter, or the Ariens dealer body throughout the world. He definitely made a lasting positive impression on me with respect to his business, faith, and family. Thank you for sharing him as he created so many opportunities for others.

Round Lake Road and the world won't be the same without him.

God Bless,

Paul Samdperil

Dan...I only had the opportunity to meet and speak with your dad a coule times. it only took once to realize what a considerate and caring man he was. I was carring a bronze from the parking lot into your offices one day and I heard footsteps behind me. It was your dad running to the door to open it for me...with a smile on his face. i'm sure he will be missed by you and your family and all at Ariens as well. Bill Jauquet

Mimi and Family:
You shared so much with our family over many years. Our kids spent many great times together. Brillion has been a melting pot for all kinds of people from adult football players to Cursillo friends. Mike was always in the middle (maybe leader) of all good things of this small town.
Mike was my business mentor, spiritual leader and jogging partner at 4:30AM M-F, 4.2 miles, when he used his "Church Key" to allow us to share Eucharist.
Mike was a genuine person who once told me that you don't die until you want to....I know he was ready and God Bless my friend and all the people whose lives he helped.
Mike had a God shadow...Peace!

To the Ariens Family

My deepest sympathy for the Ariens Family in the passing of Mike. He has and always will hold a special spot in the hearts of the Haese family. He always treated you like you were one of the family in and out of work. He knew what was going on in our lives and was concerned about everyone around you. He always looked out for you and even checked up on me after our run in in the parking lot. There is a love for you that words cannot describe.

May we meet again when all our work is done here.

Three years ago today we were all together in Holy Family Church in Brillion; on March 3rd Mike gave a beautiful reflection at my father Bill Coonen's funeral. And a year later Mimi spoke at my mother Katie's funeral. Your kindness and gentle presence were certainly a source of comfort to all of us then; friendship and faith have joined our families so closely together for nearly 60 years. May we continue to support each other in love and prayer. I wish I could be there to celebrate Mike's memory and his rebirth into life eternal. Love, Tim

Good by friend.

March 3, 2015

I had the honor and privilege of working for and with Mike for 35 years. What a gentleman, always kind and considerate, a man of faith, well read and always happy to discuss and share his knowledge with others. Mike and I travelled to many parts of the world; he never complained whatever challenge or difficulty he had to face and first and foremost we always had to find the nearest church wherever we were.
Farewell Mike, travel light and rejoice at the end of your journey in the Lord's kingdom. God bless you.
Mimi, Dan and family, we share your sorrow.

March 3, 2015

As friend and college room mate of Margarets, I visited the Arien's home in Brillion often. Mike was always welcoming, kind, interested and inclusive when I was there. I felt like one of the family around that big table. My favorite memory of him is when he took Margaret and I to a Packer game. After we parked, he walked SO fast to get to the stadium that we had trouble keeping up. I have since performed a dramatic, fast walk that I call "Mike Ariens at a Packer game" in order to make Margaret laugh. Another favorite memory is sledding down the hill on their property and walking the beautiful woods surrounding it. Then coming in to raid the always well stocked kitchen and chat with Mimi. I will remember Mr. Ariens with a book in his hand, at ease in his living room. God Bless the Ariens. Love, Meg McIlwee Metzler (Chicago)

I remember the blistering summer of 2012 with my employee anniversary landing on a particularly stifling day - nearly 100 degrees. I thought to myself that Mike surely will not come to congratulate me on such a day, but a short time later, there he was! The sweat was running down his face, and I told him he shouldn't have bothered, but he replied, "It's your anniversary! I need to thank and congratulate you for your service to us." I'll not forget that! May Jesus provide comfort and healing to the Ariens family during this difficult time.

I cannot think of a person in the Fox Valley/Green Bay area that has not been impacted by something Michael Ariens has touched. Be it business, Catholic ministry or a friendly smile. Mike lived his life like we should strive to live ours; for the company and benefit of others.

My prayers and wishes go out to Mimi - the strongest lady I know - and every member of Mike's family. Growing up, Ariens' yard wasn't a place, it was a destination.

We are all better people for having known Mike, Mimi and their entire family. I know that I am.

I'm going to miss Mike. He was one of the finest people I've ever met. It was an honor working for him. I consider myself so lucky to be able to have him as a friend for the past 36 yrs. RIP my friend!!!

Such an amazing man. It was great to see him at work~especially when he came to recognize your service with the company. It was great listening to him speak of how things were started at Ariens. He will be greatly missed. Our prayers are with the Ariens family, which is also our family.

Mike will be dearly missed by anyone who knew him. He was a great example of a Christian, husband & father. He was an employer who set the standard for all others. He will be missed.
