Phyllis Smith Stevenson passed away while in hospice care in Greenville, SC on Tuesday, March 22, 2016.

She was born in 1928 in Huntington, West Virginia. She was in the 1946 graduating class of Huntington East High School, and was graduated with a BA degree by Marshall University in 1950. She took additional courses toward a SC Teaching Certification in Early Childhood Education at Clemson University. In 2000, she received a Certificate in Spiritual Formation from Columbia Theological Seminar in Decatur, Georgia.

Before she and her husband moved to Foothills Retirement Community in 2001, they lived for thirty three years in Clemson, SC where she was active in the community. She was a member of Fort Hill Presbyterian Church, where she served on the Session, taught Sunday School, served on the Wedding Guild, and conducted many women's retreats. She taught kindergarten at Pendleton Presbyterian Church in Pendleton, South Carolina, and also first and second grade at Pendleton Elementary School for ten years. She and her husband were co-directors of Rockbrook Camp for Girls in Brevard, NC from 1968 to 1972. At the time of her death, she was an active member of the Easley P.E.O. Chapter AN of P.E.O. International. She held many offices over the years as well as being the Chaplain.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Jack Lovett Stevenson; son, John Stevenson, Jr. and his partner Helen Knouf of Fairview, NC; daughter, Susan Stevenson Kaltz and her husband Mark of Destin, FL; son, David Stevenson and his wife Ceevah of Mars Hill, NC; and daughter, Anne Stevenson Anderson of Greenville, SC. She was "Nana" to five granddaughters: Meredith Kaltz Cleveland and her husband Taylor of Atlanta, GA, Emily Kaltz and Callie Kaltz of Destin, FL, Eliza Stevenson and Willow Stevenson of Mars Hill, NC.

A memorial service will be held at Fort Hill Presbyterian Church in Clemson, SC at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 26, 2016.

Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice, or one of the following: Fort Hill Presbyterian Church; the Chapel Fund of the Foothills Presbyterian Retirement Community; the Stevenson Smith Lovett fund of Clemson University; the Performing Arts Department of Clemson University; or the Rev. and Mrs. Jack Lovett Stevenson Scholarship Fund at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Virginia.

Jack and family. Sure wish we lived closer and could be with the family this saturday......Phil was a remarkable woman . I remember times with her patiently teaching my children on visits and reading to them. We shared a love of gardening and southern cooking.....Enjoy this family time and cherish the many memories....... hugs. jeannie matthews

Oh Jack and family, I know your hearts are broken but comforted to know that you will see this beautiful lady again. I have such fond memories of our time together at Hospice of the Foothills. Phyl was the consummate southern lady who was loved by so many. Know you are reminiscing over the so many years you shared here on earth. With love and prayers-
