Maurice Hunt Obituary

MAURICE O. HUNT A Social Work Pioneer Maurice O. Hunt of Greenwich peacefully passed away in the Greenwich Hospital December 22, 2010. He was 98. He is survived by his son, Stephen Hunt and his wife Julia of Hong Kong and his daughter, Carolyn Anderson and her husband, Gerald of Greenwich, CT. Family members include his grandchildren Lorna Hunt, Laird Hunt, Heather Hunt, Clifford Anderson and Gwendolyn Anderson and his great grandchildren Eva Hunt, Morgan Famous and Theodore Anderson. He was born June 28, 1912 in Coatesville Indiana. He received his Masters of Social Work from Indiana University. From 1944 - 1946 he served with United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) where he was appointed the Deputy Director of Welfare for the Greece Mission. Maurice served as the executive director of the Indiana Council of Social Services, Indiana Director of Public Welfare, Assistant Director of the American Public Welfare Association and Chief of the Maryland Department of Child Welfare. In 1968 he was the First Deputy Commissioner of the New York City Department of Social Services. From 1969-1982 he was Administrative Vice President of the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies. He organized and directed the National Study Service. He served on the board of the Greenwich United Way and for eight years he served on the Greenwich Board of Social Services. In 2006 Indiana University School of Social Work honored him with the distinguished alumni award. In 2009 he was named a Pioneer of Social Work by the National Association of Social Work. Friends may call at The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902 on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 from 9:30-11:00 AM. A funeral procession will be leaving at 11:20 AM for a service of witness to the resurrection to be held at the First Congregational Church of Greenwich, 108 Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich, CT at 12:00 PM. Interment will follow at the Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The First Congregational Church of Greenwich. To leave online condolences, please visit www.cognetta.com.

Maurice was a smart and caring gentleman. I learned so much from him and valued every moment that he shared with the Greenwich United Way and the greater community. It was a privilege and an honor to know and work with him. My most sincere condolences your family.
