Barrie Sommerfield
Barrie Sommerfield son of Edgar and Marjorie (Frank) Sommerfield, passed peacefully in Stamford on March 18, 2018. Barrie is survived by his brother Frank and his wife Elissa and his sister Jane Jacobson and her husband Ozzie. He is also survived by his loving daughter Emily Kunschner and sons Peter, Tim and Tom, eight grandchildren and his wife, Faith (Solinger) Sommerfield.
Born on January 3, 1929 in New York City, Barrie graduated from Cornell in 1950, served in the US Air Force, and then joined his family's textile company. After an apprenticeship there, Barrie embarked on a long career with Saks Fifth Avenue, where he became the senior executive managing the Better-Ready-to-Wear division. Barrie left Saks in the early '70's to start his own licensing firm, Sommerfield & Associates, which he ran until his retirement in the late '90's.
Barrie's loves were his family, his annual trip to Florida to visit Tim, sailing, bicycling and travel, and in his later years walks around Tod's point with his family and caregivers. He was a devoted and supportive alumnus of Cornell and supported a number of charities and causes close to his children's hearts: the Children's Tumor Foundation (http://www.ctf.org/), the Pan Mass Challenge (https://www.pmc.org/), the Greenwich Point Conservancy (https://www.greenwichpoint.org/about/#the-conservancy) Friends who wish to donate in Barrie's memory are encouraged to consider any of these wonderful causes.
Barrie was kind, funny, humble and deeply loved by his extended family, his caregivers, and his many friends. His wonderful smile and gentle humor will be missed by all.
The family plans to hold a private memorial ceremony at Tod's Point in the Spring to be followed by a public reception to celebrate his life.
