George Poitras Obituary

George Gabriel Poitras, 93, of Manchester died peacefully Sunday, August 14, 2016 at his home. He was born November 8, 1922 in Saint Andre, New Brunswick, Canada, the son of Edmond Poitras and Memorie (Michaud) Poitras. He was a combat veteran of World War Two, serving in the U.S. Army, landing in Normandy as part of the D-Day invasion and serving through the end of the war. He moved to Hartford in 1946, and to Manchester in 1956. Before his retirement he worked for many years for the Manchester Board of Education. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Lillian (Fortin) Poitras. He is survived by his five children and their spouses; Ronald G. Poitras of Thompson Ct; Robert and Deborah Poitras of Glastonbury; Roland G. Poitras of Franklin; Patricia and James Sienna of Middletown, and Elaine and William Gunther of Georgia, VT.: Nine grandchildren; Ronn Poitras, Alicia Poitras, Grant Gunther, Eric Gunther, Elise Gunther; Sarah Sienna, Salvatore Sienna, Katie Poitras, Jason Poitras; and one great grandchild, Mason Poitras; and several brothers and sisters in New Brunswick, Canada. George's life centered around his home and extended family. We will miss his stories of the old days on the farm in Canada, of working in the Maine woods during the depression, and of his experiences during the war. The family wishes to extend deep gratitude to his caregiver and friend Yolanda Morgan for her compassionate and loving care in his last days. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 18th at 9:15 am from the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center St. Manchester with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Assumption, 29 Adams St. South, Manchester, followed by burial in St. James Cemetery, Manchester. I am so very sorry for your loss. I hadn't seen George in a few years, but always held him close. He was my daughter Talia's " adopted" Grandpa George, for which I was always grateful, as my daughter's grandparents passed too soon for her to really know them at all. We have a wooden reindeer that George made some years ago, that we fill with greenery and lights at Christmas. This year it will blaze in his memory! I wish I could be there with you tomorrow, but know that I am with you in spirit.
Love and peace to you all,
Betsy Follansbee, with Talia and Alistair Follansbee

Dear Elaine, Patty, Bill, Elise, Grant, Eric, Sarah and Sal,

I am thinking a lot about you this afternoon but am comforted by the fact that you have each other and the other members of your family as you think about your dad and grandfather. I have vivid memories of him at Christmas when we played poker and he talked about his experiences in the army.

I am very tempted to jump in my car and drive down to be with you tonight. I guess, though, the best we can do is send love your way and welcome you home when you get back to Vermont.
Love,
Martha and Jim
