LEROY, Colin A.
Colin A. Leroy, 23, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2011 surrounded by his loving family, his parents Craig Leroy and Bethany Alvord, and his two wonderful sisters Kyley and Torrey Leroy. Colin was beloved by his family. He was a graduate of West Hartford's Hall High School and a 2010 graduate of Trinity College. He had been accepted to the University of Connecticut Law School and was to begin classes this Fall. Colin had a wonderful life growing up in Suffield, with his beloved neighbor Karl Johnson, and in West Hartford, CT. He was a soccer player who was a four year starter and senior captain at Hall High as well as a top level premier player. Many of our most wonderful times centered around travel to soccer tournaments. His coach, Zeke Seguro remained a constant in his life, as a teacher and friend. Colin loved the Seguro family and was most happy, during his recent illness, hanging out with his Seguro "cousins". Colin also loved the beach and boarding in the ocean and spent many happy times with his family, including our dogs, at the Rhode Island shore. Colin worked for many summers as a paraprofessional and camp counselor for special needs children at Whiting Lane School and as a Beachland Park "buddy". At Trinity College, Colin majored in history and was an active member of his fraternity, Alpha Delta Phi where he was head of its community service program and responsible for organizing AD's regular involvement in public service activities. This was a continuation of his activity during high school in volunteering for the Town of West Hartford. He helped in numerous ways including tutoring at the Hillcrest Community Center and working at the Town's food bank. The staff knew that whenever they needed a helping hand they could count on Colin' assistance, during his high school and college years. During his illness, Colin's two sisters were pillars of strength and comfort. Kyley, a medical school student, took the year off to care for and comfort her brother. Torrey, attending college in New Haven, balanced her athletic and academic demands , to be with Colin constantly during this time. Their parents simply could not be more proud of them and the women they have become. His godmother, Jane Hopkins Fisher, and Bill Anastasiades, a dear friend, were also wonderful companions throughout Colin's illness. The Seltzer Family, and his many additional friends helped the entire family during this difficult time. Colin spent much time at the Harry and Helen Gray Center of Hartford Hospital over the course of the last year. We would be remiss not to mention and give grateful thanks to the nurses at the Conklin Building, Floor 2, and the outpatient nurses in Avon, where he received care. The caring and comfort provided by the nursing staff was so heartfelt and wonderful. You all touched our family in a profound way. A fund has been created to help meet the critical needs of the West Hartford Food Pantry, over time. Donations can be sent to COLIN'S FUND, C/ O Roy & Leroy, P.O. Box 270841 West Hartford, CT 06127. In lieu of flowers, please send your donation to COLIN'S FUND.

A couple years ago Colin and I and four dogs were in your back yard. Above and circling, three or four hawks swooped and cried, riding the thermals up and down above us. We looked at each other and were silent. The wind was wild and the hawks were both menacing and beautiful. We watched for a while and I remember thinking that there were very few young men who would have had the depth to contemplate, let alone to understand the power of that encounter. In my mind, Colin will always be there, silently watching and understanding -- a compassionate, somehow wise and thoughtful soul.
With love to all of you. Nancy
