Hayley Elizabeth Petit

Hayley Petit Obituary

PETIT, Hayley Elizabeth Hayley Elizabeth Petit, 17, died unexpectedly and tragically on Monday (July 23, 2007). Born October 15, 1989, the daughter of Jennifer Hawke-Petit and William A. Petit, Jr. M.D., she was a June graduate of Miss Porter's School and was headed to Dartmouth College in the fall. Hayley was well known, admired, and loved for the affection and integrity she brought to all that she was, as a student, and athlete, a leader, and a friend. Throughout her high school career, Hayley was a High Honor Roll student; she was a member of Cum Laude, a journalism prize-winner, and winner of the school's award for "exceptional community service." In addition, she was admitted early to Dartmouth College. As a committed athlete, Hayley was a three-season varsity player of cross country, basketball, and crew; two-season varsity captain of basketball and crew; and was elected to the all-school senior leadership position of Athletic Association Head. Within the school community, her leadership example and impact, both private and public, were profound. Hayley's leadership extended beyond the school to the larger community, in which she raised thousands of dollars in support of Multiple Sclerosis research. Hayley called no attention to herself, putting her energy into leading by example and encouraging those around her to do the same. She was honored and respected by her teachers and her coaches, for whom she gave her best; and by her class and schoolmates, both older and younger, who saw Hayley as someone they wanted to be with, as well as someone they wanted to be like. What Hayley made of the short time she had, was far greater than many who have much more. Her example is one that her friends and peers will continue to emulate in her honor, and Hayley's presence and profile in the Miss Porter's School community will endure in the memories of all who knew her. She was the beloved sister of Michaela Rose and is survived by her father, William A. Petit, Jr. M.D.; her paternal grandparents, William and Barbara Petit of Plainville; her maternal grandparents, Richard and Marybelle Hawke of Slippery Rock, PA and Venice, FL, her maternal great-grandmother, Florence Triano; her Aunt Cindy and Uncle Bill Renn and their children, Evan and Lydia; Uncle Glenn Petit, his children, Rachel and Alicia, and their children, Jacob and Molly, Aunt Kyla, Uncle Mike and Aunt Erin Petit and their children, Michael, Brooke, Tristan and Paige; Uncle Brian Petit; and Aunt Johanna and Uncle Dennis Chapman and their children, Abby and Andrew. She also leaves her great aunts and uncles, Jean McNuff, Judith Hodge, Jim Buchanan, Elnora Richards, John Hawke, Johanna and Joseph Ierna, Frank Triano, Andrea and James LaChapelle, Edward and Roberta Petit, Beverly and Larry Joyce, Sharon and Eugene Beaulieu, Gary Petit, Clara, Marilyn, Victoria, Sally, and Linda Petit, and many dear friends. We meet to pay tribute to the lives of Hayley, her sister, Michaela, and their mother, Jennifer on Saturday, July 28, at 11 a.m. at the Herbert D. Welte Auditorium on the campus of Central Connecticut State University in New Britain. Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad St., Plainville, is assisting the family with arrangements. Dear Hayley,
How can time go by so fast? Youre all grown up now in Heaven hours and we, by comparison, must seem so young and frail..and I suppose very much clueless(?) about real reality.
We need guidance, thats for sure and amazing grace, and keeping in touch with you..and knowing that love connects forever..youve done so much on this planet to make it a better place..your Dad has been your tireless advocate. Hes doing a great and worthy job and I know you shine inside extra big because of him.
Keep it up Hayley girl. Keep up the sunshine, were all better for it.
Much love,
Nancy

hey hale..sorry if no one calls you by that...its just..my best friend..an angel in her own way..well thats her name..and i always shorten it up to fit the way i feel most comfortable..so..i apologize if it feels strange being called by that nickname....Anyway..it's very strange..i mean..it's been awhile since I last visited you...whats up Hale...you don't know me..but In a way you do. See..I was once lost...completely and utterly broken...but it became angels of God..loke yourself..and michaela..and your mom..that keep the spirit and presence of God within me...sometimes I will pay Him no mind...and weeks could go by without as much as a thank you...but then...a slightly overcast sunday...intermittently interrupted by a beautiful cool sunshine on long island..well..its those days that I remember...(lol..and..i have a reminder on my email that let's me know when someone added a new entry...hence..the combination of the two occurences..well)...it makes me think...alot...about gratitude..we all love you...very very very much...until next time hun.....

Hayley…these quotes remind me of how you "lived" your life…

Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.
(Saint Francis of Assisi)

Dignity and Respect has to do with what you are ready, willing, and able to accept within yourself and in accepting to be able to give others. It is your personal power to make a difference by being true to the best within you and letting that truth shine through your words and actions."
(Gail Pursell Elliott)

Thank you for having lived your life in a way that has benefitted the whole.

I watched the interview of Dr. Petit on Oprah today and my heart broke. What a horrific crime.

Dr. Petit, my heart goes out to you, you are a very courageus man and I will pray that God continues to give you the strenght to get up everyday and continue to live. I sincerely hope that some day you will find peace and happiness again. May your beloved and beautiful family rest in peace!

Amy Leiner

December 9, 2010

Dr. Petit,
You have changed my life for the better
and forever. The interview, you so eloquently gave to Oprah for all of us to hear, was the most beautiful expression of grief, hope and life, that I have ever experienced in my 50+ years. I was in the courthouse on the day before and the day of the jury handing over the verdict to support my friend who served on the jury. It was then that I felt such a strong connection to you and the Petit Foundation. I intend to be a full supporter of the Petit Foundation and would love to help anyway I can to help organize events or by donating what I do, to help raise money for MS.
Tomorrow, I plan on visiting the Memorial Garden. Peace is all around you now, Dr. Petit, just reach out and grab it, then pull it inside your soul so you can "live" in honor of the three woman who have changed so many lives.
You are my hero. Your interview was brilliant and hopefully smoothed some of those jagged edges in your heart.
With love and honor.

Dr. Petit:

I have been trying to find the appropriate manner and words in which to convey my most heartfelt sympathy to you, but. it has become glaringly evident that there isn't any. Nor will there ever be. What I can and will do each and every day hereforward, asking my parents and four brothers and sisters to do the same, and they most definitely will, is to pray for your strength, courage and will to carry on. My God! Im not sure how, but when your ready...please turn to Him for refuge from the pain. As I write this, chills run through my body when, in my own mind, my thoughts turn to yours. The unfathomable grief, pain, and your thoughts, and your feelings when all is said and done. When the cameras are turned off and the thousands have vanished, resuming the lives of their own. Please, please Mr. Petit...we are all here for you in each and every way! And We ALWAYS will be, just say the word, and I as well as thousands others will be there...waiting...praying..praying for your strength...for your peace of mind...and the precious precious souls of your Jennifer, your Hayley and your Michaela. Please..Please Lord God,...hear our cries of anguish and pain, and those of my most recent friend and brother, Dr. William Petit. Watch over him ALWAYS!

It takes time my loss was not so violent but a loss.....In due time the pain will begone...All those terrific memories will supercede the negatives! You will soon relish in thier love! They will want you to move forward. Have a life but know they are always near.

May the peace of Christ give you total and complete peace Dr. Petit. I am deeply sorry for your loss.

September 19, 2010

Dear Dr. Petit,
I have only very recently learned of the heinous crimes committed against your beautiful wife and daughters, and yourself. Simple heartfelt words of a stranger cannot possibly take your pain away, but I deeply wish that this message and loving thoughts from across the world, could help to ease the horrific agony that you and your innocent, happy family suffered.
With sincere sympathy and deepest wishes for your recovery,
Susan A'hearn,

My deepest sympathies.

Dear Dr. Petit - May God bless you and your entire family. God show His grace on the entire Petit and Hawke families. May God rest the souls of your precious Angels too. Dr. Petit and Family:
My mind has been thinking about about the Petit family and I have sorrow in my heart for what happened to them. I can't even begin to say how horrible this all is - it has all already been said. But if I could do something to change what happened and make it not be so, I really would. At least there is some comfort in knowing that these three beautiful ladies had good lives while they were here. And I hope it helps a bit to know that there are people who do care about Dr. Petit and his family and do think about them often.
