William Carney Obituary

William ( Bill ) Robert Carney M.D., age 71, of Avon, Ct and Port Orange, Fl died peacefully on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford with his wife Diane by his side.In addition to being a loving husband he was the proud father and grandfather of a blended family, which includes Audrey Carney of Williamsburg, NY, Rob Carney of San Francisco, Ca, Jacquelyn (Claudio) Dijmarescu of Newington, CT, Gregory (Stefania) Campbell, also of Newington, CT, grandchildren Jaime, Cameron, Calliope and Hazel Campbell and numerous extended family members who all will miss him so much.He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Virginia Brace Carney and grandchild Lucianna Campbell.Bill grew up in Manchester, Ct, then went to the big city for college at Tufts University in Boston. He returned to attend the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and was a proud member of their second graduating class.Bill was an outstanding physician and man who always gave his best to everyone he met regardless of who they were. He also was a great teacher and role model who will be remembered with respect and affection by all the staff at St Francis and others he encountered over the years. He retired in 2015 as Chief of Nephrology at St Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford and Senior Partner at Greater Hartford Nephrology in Bloomfield after a long and productive career as a caregiver, mentor and friend to so many of his peers, coworkers and patients. In his spare time Bill was an avid reader and could often be found with a book in his hand while sitting by the ocean in Daytona or at the table on his backyard deck in Avon. He enjoyed nature and simply appreciating the peacefulness of the trees and sand around him. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends trying out new restaurants and preparing new and complicated recipes, although he never tired of a good burger. He will be missed every day by so many people. His family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to the staff of the ICU at St Francis, especially the Nurses and Respiratory Therapists who took such great care of Bill while he was a patient there. Their outstanding attention and compassion were a great comfort to us all and we will be eternally grateful to them. There will be no calling hours. A private graveside memorial will be held at a later date at The Evergreen Cemetery in Avon, which is a peaceful place surrounded by the woods that he loved. Diane, I am so sorry for your loss. Bill was special and unique in so many ways.He loved his children so can imagine how he felt about grandchildren. He cared for his patients not just as a clinician, but with compassion and understanding. Working with him for 25 years I have a lot of memories - his sense of humor, music choices and that motorcycle poster.
Gone, but not forgotten. May he rest in peace.

I went to Manchester High School with Bil and, although l haven't seen him since, remember him just as described here. He was delightful to know and filled with enthusiasm for everything he did. He's touched many lives and left the world a better place.

I knew Bill when we attended school back in Manchester, CT. He was very nice to everyone back in the day and I knew when he chose to be a physician he would be the most caring man. My sympathy to his family.

I was a nurse in the dialysis unit at St. Francis Hospital starting in 1977 and knew Dr. Carney up until he retired. He was such a nice person, so kind & compassionate to all his patients and they loved him.
My condolences to Diane and the family.

I worked with Bill Carney for over 30 years , beginning in the dialysis unit at St. Francis Hospital. I was the dialysis social worker there. He was truly beloved by his patients and he was patient, kind, and compassionate with all of them. Even though he retired a number of years ago, his long-term patients continued to ask for him. As a colleague he was wonderful to work with and he always took the time to both teach and listen. I feel fortunate to have known him and to work alongside him for so many years! He also had a great sense of humor which was contagious.
I send my deepest sympathies but please know what a positive impact he made on so many of us, both patients and peers.
