Theodore Yampanis Obituary

Theodore "Ted" Yampanis peacefully passed away with his wife Lynne (Murphey) Yampanis holding his hand at Saint Francis Hospital on October 20, 2018. He was the son of the late John and Helen (Stavros) Yampanis born in Waterbury on July 26, 1938. Ted and Lynne were married for 31 years and spent nearly 25 years enjoying their summer cottage on Columbia Lake. They embraced their many family members and friends enjoying barbeques, fishing, badminton, water skiing, and good conversation. Ted loved to take his boat out on the lake pulling his grandchildren on a tube in a revolving circle as they gleefully laughed knowing that their "birthday surprise" would soon occur and that they would end up in the water. The lives of his grandchildren were a top priority for Ted. He loved to talk to them about their lives, their schooling and their goals. He felt blessed to see his grandchildren Joseph Louis Philbrick, Alexa Lynne Philbrick, Erika Lynne Sturgis, Nicholas John Sturgis, Robert Niles Yampanis, and Clara Beatrice Yampanis grow into the fine young men and women they are today. Ted truly loved golfing and the friends he made at the golf course. In the winter Ted bowled always looking forward to the day when he could golf again. Ted's life wasn't all play. He attended Hopkins School, Hillhouse High School, Yale University and graduated from Columbia University. He received his Master's Degree in business from the University of Hartford. He began his career of helping others by working for HUD during the 70s in Portland, CT. In the late 70s, 80s, and 90s he worked for the Town of Manchester and volunteered as President of the Manchester Credit Union for many years. In retirement he worked as Director of Housing at Snipsic Village in Ellington, CT for over 10 years working to help others. Ted's passion for music and playing the piano led him to volunteer as President of the Manchester Band Shell for many years. He fulfilled his lifetime dream of going on a musical tour in October of 2017 visiting Mozart's home in Vienna, Austria and attending private concerts. This was one of the top ten European countries that Ted and Lynne visited during their lives together. When he turned 80 years old this year, Ted said, "I lived a good life." In addition to Lynne, his wife, Ted is survived by his sons David Yampanis and his wife Wendy Prentiss of Norwell, MA and Mark Yampanis and his wife Wendy Blank of Berkley, CA; his step-daughters, Jean Philbrick (Kenneth) of Vernon and Janet Sturgis (Scott) of Tolland. He also leaves his grandchildren, sister Christine House, brother Drew Yampanis and his partner Gay McNulty, sister-in-law Janice Starkweather, Aunt Gloria and Uncle Mario Abondolo and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. We especially want to thank Dr. Flaherty, Dr. Stone, Dr. Marino, Dr. Gleason, Dr. Kapoor, Dr. Orris and the medical staff of Saint Francis Hospital for their dedication and compassion in caring for Ted. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2018 from 4-7 p.m. at Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Rd., Vernon. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday at the First Congregational Church, 695 Hartford Turnpike, Vernon, CT, followed by interment at the East Cemetery, 220 East Center St., Manchester, CT. Dear Lynne,

I so sorry to learn of Ted's passing. I worked with him for over 20 years at the Town Hall. Ted was a true gentleman always willing to help out with his knowledge of so many things. I will always remember him for his delicious Greek treats at our Christmas parties.

May you take comfort in all your beautiful memories.
