Donald Yolish Obituary

Donald Herman Yolish passed away on Monday, January 18th, 2021. He was 86 years old. Don was born and raised in Hartford, CT, the eldest son of Russian immigrants, Miriam Katz Yolish and Simon Yolish. He grew up a devout Jew and decided to pursue the profession of his father, graduating from UConn's School of Pharmacy in 1959. Don went on to own and operate three pharmacies in Hartford's North End, employing dozens and serving countless others, over four decades. He was a proud pharmacist, small business owner, and Hartford community leader. Don cherished those memories his entire life.

Don enjoyed a good breakfast. He really loved going out for breakfast and asking for the usual. He also loved UConn hoops, the Boston Red Sox, classic jazz music and Seinfeld reruns. He had an affinity for gambling. Whether it be the stock market, trips to Atlantic City, poker with buddies, bridge with his wife, or gin rummy and backgammon with his children ("a penny a point"), he loved the action. He was the king of one liners, quick with his wit, always good for a laugh, and reliable for incredibly corny (and incredibly outdated) bad yet hilarious jokes. He was a towering 6'5" gentle giant, with a deep soothing voice, that could make anyone smile.

Upon retirement in 2000, Don and his beloved wife Jean moved on from Avon, CT and settled in two of their favorite places: Nantucket, MA and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. They spent the final quarter of his life enjoying time with their friends and family in both locations. Don liked to keep busy. Well into retirement on Nantucket, you could find him working at the pharmacy, as well as volunteering at the senior center and the library. For a retired octogenarian, Don somehow had endless amounts of bookwork and never enough time to do it. He was an avid reader, his favorite material being the latest spy thriller and The Courant obits.

Donald was a fighter. He beat Lymphoma, and several heart attacks, but he never gave up on life, and always brought joy to those around him. The year 2020 will go down as one of the most trying in modern human history, but Don left this world filled with hope for the future. He knew his family was safe, successful and healthy, and that humanity was exiting a period of darkness and heading toward a brighter day. Donald's family could not be more proud of his life, love and legacy. While Don will be greatly missed, we can go forward knowing he is at peace.

He is survived by his wife Jean Yolish (of Nantucket, MA), brother Norman Yolish (of Shelton, CT), sister Joan Yolish Handler (of Simsbury, CT); his five children: Dayna Yolish Sproule (of Fairfield, CT), Stacy Yolish Rosen (of Bethesda, MD), Todd Yolish (of Belgrade, ME), Joshua Yolish (of Darien, CT), Stephanie Yolish McCarthy (of Berkeley, CA); and seven grandchildren: Jared and Emma Rosen, Olivia Sproule, Henry, Oliver and Clara Yolish, and Emmett Herman McCarthy.

There will be no services at this time out of respect for the safety of those who Donald loved and left behind. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Donald's name to Temple Beth David in West Hartford, CT where Don and his parents are memorialized together.

Dear Donald,

Thank you for being my friend and the brother I never had. Thank you for the breakfasts we had, the conversations about UConn Basketball, our beloved Weaver High and of course, business and growing up in the North End of Hartford - the great melting pot of our youth.

I am sad that we didn't have our last breakfast together...
You will be remembered and we will always be connected.
Your friend,
Bob

I didn’t know Donald well. But I did know that he was very funny. I knew Donald through the bridge club. He was always kind, friendly and ready with a joke or two. My condolences to his family. His life was obviously a rich and full one. He will be missed.

A new friend in Avon Ct was found at a little league game through Jean who welcomed newcomers to the area. A natural fit as Don became my first major client in my stock broker career. Traveling to north Hartford and experiencing the smile at the pharmacy that was always waiting for me Don showed me around his place proudly. A natural fit from our nights with wives at Jai-Alai to investor visits at my office and much later a wonderful day on Nantucket, we almost made it to Mexico last year, to bad. Thank you Don for some of my most happy days while growing old. One of the best is gone, love Arty..

Don was truly a “Mench”. A dear member of the Knights of Pythias.
We will miss his place on the planet.

I am so saddened to know that Donald is no longer with us. He always made me feel like family when I visited – I loved his teasing, wicked smiles and the many rummy games I played with he and Jean at their home in Avon. I hope there’s now a poker game going on in heaven. I know Gerry will cherish the company!

GOAT

Mr Yolish. I wasn’t lucky enough to meet the GOAT in this lifetime but I was blessed with the gift of his daughter, Stephanie. Which i have to assume is pretty close and the next best thing. She is funny and caring and exceptionally beautiful. She will make you play CRAPS at a vegas table until the sun comes up. And she will teach you that a true East Coaster always chooses lobster over crab because, ‘crab tastes like nothing it’s just the butter that makes it good.’ I think about this controversial take on crab A LOT and I can only assume she picked up this hot take from one of her 4th of July trips to Nantucket to visit the fam where there was ALWAY a new absolutely legendary photo of The Donald Herman casually flipping the bird, seated at a table outside, usually with a massive lobster on the table. The good life.

For me, there’s few things that top the feeling of having a great dad (or lobster, for that matter), but right up there is getting see my favorite person and her favorite person living it up, joking around, and soaking up the lives they’ve gotten to enjoy together. It was like seeing a sneak preview for a movie you know has a happy ending. Just feels good. warm.

D-Herm brought warmth and happiness wherever he went. He will be remembered always and he will live on in so many ways. Through Steph and her “dad’s schnoz”, as she likes to refer to her beautiful nose on her perfect face. And through E-Herm, her sweet, loving, funny son who honors Donald by taking the legendary name ‘Herman’ to build on his legacy. There’s no happy ending here because there can never be and ending for icons like Mr Yolish, but there will always be a happily ever after for those who got to know him.
