Harald, Diane, Gregg and Mark -

I was so sorry to hear the news about Grace - she was such a special lady and I learned so much from her during my years at Connecticut Food Stores. She had a one of a kind combination of brilliant political saavy, the kindest heart a person can have and always ready for some fun even after the toughest of days. I have many memories of the good times we shared.

You're in my thoughts and prayers during this very sad time. Take good care of one another.

With Love,

To the family of Grace Nome -- On behalf of the members of the Connecticut Food Policy Council, I want to share our deep sympathies with you. Grace was an active member of the Food Policy Council since its inception in 1997. She really understood the problems within the food system. I respected her willingness to speak out on issues she could support as well as sit back on issues she knew others could handle better. I know she fought tirelessly for the retail food industry, but also for farmers and consumers. We will miss her personality and insight. May you find peace in knowing she lived and worked with all her heart. Sincerely, Linda Drake, Chair, CT Food Policy Council

I met Grace in 1987. She scared me--a tough, short woman, on spikey, tall heels, meticulously dressed, with the omnipresent cigarette in hand...I soon learned that she was a caring, determined, driven woman who wanted to change the world. I think Grace did, on many occasions.

I will miss her really straight forward, no-nonsense talks.

I want to thank her family for sharing her with us. She loved you very much.

Dear Mr. Nome and all of Grace’s family:

In the coming days you will meet a great many people from her political “family” who genuinely respected and admired your Grace. Many of them will be important leaders, former colleagues and her beloved grocers. But you will also meet people like me, one of her political “adversaries” who often worked on the opposite side of her issues. Despite that, I loved working with – against? – Grace because she believed in her causes, never wavered from her values, was always straightforward and even, brutally honest about her intentions. It makes me smile to think of the number of times she came up to me and said, “Betty, I’m sorry but I’m going to have to kill that bill.” And she did.

She was a giant at the Capitol – an icon, really, and not one whose like we will see again. Powerful, principled, and determined, she represented her clients like no one else in the building.

It’s hard to imagine the halls of the Capitol without her. I learned a lot about the craft from her, and will always be grateful for the lessons she shared directly, and by example.

With sadness and sincere affection for a great lady,

Cynthia Brown

Diane and Family,

Reading the other entries posted here make me wish I had known you Mom. From our lovely contact at the reunion a few weeks ago, I do know that you, Diane, have a joyfulness and energy about you that I suspect is, at least in part, inherited. Please accept my wishes that peace and love surround you all.

Harold, As you know, we grew up in Bloomfield, with you and Grace and the children along with Ann and Lew Rome and their children. Those were wonderful times. Your families filled our home on holidays with lively conversation and lots of laughter. We lost Dad this year as well. Grace's vibrant smile and personality will be greatly missed. I will miss her good advice and straight, no nonsense approach . Blessings, Roberta Bryant

Dear Family, I was so sorry to hear of Grace's passing. My father was a State Senator for many years so I grew up at the Capitol and political events. Seeing Grace always made my time at these events that much better. Even as a child I remember her energy and her way to make everyone feel extra special. I still think of her often for she is someone that you don't forget. She was a wonderful person and will always be remembered fondly, placing a smile on my face.

To the Nome Family:

We were sad to hear of the passing of your loved one Grace. My wife and I had the pleasure of meeting Grace when we closed of the home that we purchased from she and Harold in April.

Reading her obituary, it was nice to see that we shared a common interest - we both love music and are musicians who play piano. It is nice to know that this will continue on in this house that we love.

We want to express our sincere sympathy to you and your family and we hope that you will find comfort in these words.

Harald - Grace was simply the best. She should a zest for life that all of us could emulate. Grace never let the last years bog her down or permit her to complain. She had the character traits so short in our world today - loyalty, courage, humour and respect for others. I was honored to know her and will never forget the kindesses she showed me. She and you are in my prayers.
