GORDON, Lancelot Altamont, Sr.
Lancelot Altamont Gordon, Sr. (Flash Gordon), 92, died peacefully surrounded by family members on Sunday, March 10, 2013. He was a resident of the Apple Rehab Coccomo Health Care Center in Meriden and a former resident of Middlefield. Lance was born on Sept. 8, 1920 in the in town of Ferndine Pen, Saint Catherine, Jamaica the son of the late Clementina and Wilfred Gordon of Spanish Town, Jamaica. While in Jamaica he was an outstanding athlete in cricket and soccer and worked and played for the Jamaica's Electric Light and Power Company's soccer team- competing alongside with his brother the late Everard Gordon. In 1944 Lance boarded a ship and came to the United States as a farm worker (first assigned to factory duty in Ohio under President Roosevelt's War Man Power Act. After completing this duty, he returned to Jamaica. In 1947 he returned for another tour but as a farmer under the same Act with Dubon Farms in Windsor Locks. It was in that year he established his family, making Hartford his home. Lance is one of the original founders of the West Indian Social Club, Inc., established in 1950. He loved cricket and soccer and played in organized sporting leagues at Keney Park and Waverly Field. His team was called the Hartford Trojans. Continuing his love for soccer and cricket he joined the Sportsman Athletic Club. He was employed by Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks where he retired as a machinist operator and was once featured on a television marketing commercial demonstrating how to operate Hamilton Standard's Milwaukee equipment. Along the way he learned the art of photography and became a professional photographer, doing weddings, portraits, political events and commercial products. He was the official photographer of the Sportsman's Athletic Club and covered several political events. He is survived by his four sons and five daughters, Lancelot Altamont Gordon Jr. and wife, Francesca of Hartford, Alan Norman Gordon of North Carolina, Ronald Thompson of Springfield, MA, Curtiss Wright of Middletown, Vernice Ramos and her husband, Hector Ramos of Meriden, twins Brenda and Carmen Gordon of Bloomfield, Rosemary Miles and Keith Reynolds of Vero Beach Florida, Lana Gordon of Germany. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. He has received several awards, amongst them including—the Cricket Hall of Fame Presidential Award and the Mauritius Hall of Fame from the Sportsman Athletic Club. We would like to thank the staff of the Apple Rehab Coccomo Health Care Center of Meriden for their warm compassionate care of our father. His family will receive friends Thursday, March 14, 2013, at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor from 10-11 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. To my dear friend Lance ... I remember well the days when you abd your family lived on Kensington St in the "Ville". That's how far we go back!!! You were an excellant example for your siblings and those that knew you and one who is a prime example that those who lived in the "Ville" can perform as well (if not better) than those who lived on the hill.
