Ted Hoey was, above all, a brilliant writer. He transformed the Weekly Reader magazine Read into a major force of learning for middle school students. He brought me on board XEP and Weekly Reader, where I remained almost 20 years. It was through his careful editing that I learned to write with distinction. He was the finest example of an editor that a green kid from the Ohio River Valley of West Virginia could ever have. I will always appreciate what he taught me, his knowledge of the arts, and his understated sense of humor. Most of all, I will forever appreciate the time he took to show me how to hone words so they made sense.

I think I erased my brief reflections on Ted Hoey so I'll condense the paragraph again. Ted was always a gentleman as well as the first to grab Readers Digest on arrival and tear out all the full-page ads.
He sang with the WR "Songbirds" and attended our CT Gilbert & Sullivan Society productions (which I still direct)when Erv Steinkamp, Lynell Johnson and Connie Unsworth sang with us. He also came to the
Russell Library special programs in the Hubbard Room. And we admired Germaine Schumacher, her eagle eye and Style Guide.
and her Condolences, of course, to the

I worked for Ted for almost 20 years on READ. Ted was a "dream" boss. I never had a bad day--we had a lot of laughs & loved to talk about TV shows & movies. He was a great guy & friend. I miss him, and send my deepest sympathy to all his family.

Dear Family,
I knew Ted through Friends of the Library.
He was always helpful, cheerful and kind. He will be missed. Peace to you all.
