Nancy Glassman Obituary

Nancy Nemser Glassman born Christmas Day, 1925, deceased May 18, 2019, daughter of the late Sarah and David Nemser, was a feisty, opinionated woman keenly aware of the world around her, and with a sharp sense of humor. She loved to read, not fiction but biography and history recalling many details of a battle or proclamation. Lou Chernow's Hamilton was the last at her bedside. Nancy and Leon loved to travel, especially to Spain where they wintered. Nancy was artistic, conscious of color and design. Her knitted sweaters were works of art in variegated color, patterns, stitches. Nancy spent many years working alongside Leon in his Bristol Hardware Store, Lee's. She wore a big apron with huge pockets which she filled with her well-deserved earnings. She ultimately bronzed and framed that apron on the walls of her Rustic Lane house in West Hartford. Nancy was predeceased by her husband Leon Glassman, daughters Amy and Rachel and son David. She will be missed by her loving son-in-law Robert Almquist with whom she lunched in Litchfield on Friday afternoons, her niece Barbara Weiss who tended her every need and her nephew-in-law Steven Weiss, Barbara Yaeger, her daughter Rachel's closest friend from childhood to Rachel's death, and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Sid and Joy Glassman who thoroughly enjoyed her company and laughter at their Saturday Night dinners with Nancy.

I remember Nancy well from the years she lived at the "Gables" in Farmington. Lunch Bunch outings, Wadsworth Tree Festival, Trivia Games, Rummikub and much more was shared with Nancy. She had the sharpest wit of just about anyone around and ALWAYS had a quick comeback to make you either chuckle or gasp! She will be missed.

Nancy was my fathers first cousin. She used to love to tease me that I was named after her. I wasnt!

Nancy was not only exceedingly bright and humorous, but also very thoughtful and a friend for life. Nancy only first knew me as the wife of the associate rabbi of Temple Beth Israel, but in 1963 when she heard I had the measles, she appeared at my door every day to pick up my two young children, ages 2 and 5. Thus a long friendship ensued between Leon, Nathan, Nancy and me, all of us being bibliophiles. My husband officiated at Leon's funeral. The way Nancy bore the loss of her spouse and three children was a testimony to her strength. Her memory will always be a blessing for me and especially for those who were so devoted to her during her last years.
