MARSHALL FREY Obituary

FREY, MARSHALL CLYDE. On Friday April 9th, 2010, Marshall Clyde Frey, beloved father, and loved by many, passed away in Miami at the age of 63 after a brief but intense struggle with colon cancer. He was survived by his three children, Raman, Nita and Amida Frey, and his mother Trudy Frey. Born in Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York on July 18th, 1946 to father Sam Frey and mother Trudy Solomon, Marshall moved to Miami with his mother and brother shortly after his father's unexpected death to attend Miami Beach High, subsequently receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida in 1967, and Master's Degree in psychology from the University of Miami. Marshall's thesis work dealt with bringing Far Eastern meditation and yoga techniques to the West and making them accessible to everyone. He was a pioneer in this field, often bringing India's most noted yogis and gurus to the temple he ran for so many years on Mary Street in Coconut Grove for retreats and workshops, including such names as Baba Hari Dass and Ram Dass. Marshall's own Sanskrit name, given to him by Baba Hari Dass, was Surendra Das. Shortly thereafter, Marshall opened the I-Ching Gallery on Main Highway in Coconut Grove, and what began as an incense- bookshop quickly blossomed into the finest collection of Oriental and Far Eastern Antiques in America. Marshall, along with his partner and mother of his children, Sachi Wagner, quickly became noted as the foremost authorities on Asian antiques in the West. Marshall was able to collect and broker pieces of art and antiques that can now be found in the collections of sultans and some of the finest museums in the world. Later in life, Marshall turned to the arts more fully, embracing a successful career as a professional photographer, as well as other incarnations, such as family therapist and investment broker among others, while always maintaining his primary inclination as an art and antiques dealer, later opening another I-Ching Gallery in the Design District. He became a strong community activist, and a great patron and supporter of the arts in all its forms. He published an online monthly newsletter with a circulation of tens of thousands of subscribers called Miami Life which chronicled daily activities and cultural events in Miami. One of his favorite Zen quotes sums up well his attitude towards life and the people around him: Let there be such oneness between you, that when one cries, the other shall taste salt. Thank you to all who made his passing easier and brought laughter rather than tears to his bedside. Services will be held on Monday April 12th, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at Temple Beth El Memorial Gardens located at 4900 Griffin Road, Davie, FL 33314; (954) 584-7151. Hi Marshall, I can't believe you've been gone for almost a year now. I think of you often and I miss you like crazy. Life just isn't the same without you here. As far as I'm concerned, Miami will never be the same without you in it. For years I thought I missed Miami, but upon my last visit there, I realized that what I really missed was you. I miss our long phone conversations. I miss your laugh. I miss your voice. I miss your spirit... I miss you! Never will I forget the life lessons you taught me. Especially, the importance of love, respect and compassion for all living things. And mostly about forgiveness. I am blessed for having known you, and your family. Your spirit lives on through the people who love you. You won't be forgotten by us. Kisses :)

Marshall, I am so saddened and devestated by the loss of you. i saw that you did live life to the fullest, from the moment I met you in 1969 when you lived on bird avenue and you took me to the monkey jungle on the back of your motorcycle, and how you spoke to the monkeys as if you were one of them, and some of them actually seemed to recognize you. you had a wonderful black dog, her name was ralph, and then you grew up... well, older anyway, and had 3 amazing kids. I miss you very much and am blessed to have had you in my life.

I just found out Marshall had pssed away. I am devistated. I was going to see him next week while I was in Miami. I met Marshall in 1980 when I returned to America after many years in Asia. He was living on Mary Street next to the Templ of Love, where I would stay sometimes. He was a true soul with a wonderful Zen spirit and a great person. We became good friends and we went to many parties together. Marshall always knew where all the best parties were happening. I loved his I Ching Gallery. It was the best Asian Art Gallery in the country. Miami, especailly Coconut Grove will not be the same with out him around. Who will do 'Miami Life' news letter now? The ancient Greeks had a saying: As long as your remembered, you are IMMORTAL! Rest in peace my brother. You are remembered! Brian "Bb" Bombay

For 30 years Marshall was more than a friend to me - He was my fourth brother.I could tell him my deepest darkest secrets and I knew it was like having them in a lock box.The down side to this was that I could never get the dirt on anyone else! He never said a bad word about anyone, at least almost anyone. He was my partner in crime and over the years we crashed countless parties and events together. We were a great team. Marshall knowing every entrance to every hotel on Miami Beach and me with my British accent, how could we fail.I never knew a soul who was quicker on his feet than Marshall. He was also my GPS. One time I called him from San Francisco to inform him franticly that I was lost and he guided me to my destination.Besides being an avid news follower he loved '24' and manyies the time I would call him during a commercial and he would answer "CTU Headquarters". But most of all he truly lived life in the moment and to the fullest and he really did it his way. Marshall I Love You - Farewell Sweet Prince.

Dear Marshall, in this life you were an enlightened person, thus for sure now you have a high rank in the heaven, near father Abraham. We, friends and relatives that remained, will miss you and remember always with love because you have been a good man and a sincere friend. Enzo Perilli.

What a wonderful man was Marshall with his amazing and almost irresistable charm and his subtle power over people...he was a friend to everyone who knew him. The aspirant for Enlightenment... vows not to accept final release until everything that exists in the universe has attained Nirvana... He refused to discuss abstract metaphysical problems such as immorality of the soul and advocated a life devoted to universal compassion and brotherhood. He lived life in a simple and honest manner. A superior man, I will miss him profoundly. My deepest sympathy to his family.

I met Marshall 35 years ago when I first came to the Temple of Yoga on Mary Street for a class. From that time on I was brought into a family of students of Baba Hari Dass that lived at the temple and ran the Iching Store. As the families grew bigger, Marsh delivered all three of his children and I believe Saroj and Yogesh. Over the years I have watched the kids grow into wonderful adults and have spent time with Marsh at many art and spiritual events around Miami. I have been a student of Baba Hari Dass since the day I met him in Peacock Park and I thank the Iching family for bringing him to Coconut Grove for all of us to meet.

He always had a sense of humour, and kept those of us in Miami up on whatever art event was happening at the time. He blossomed into a wonderful photographer and I loved getting emails with his photos and stories of what was going on. I am saddened by his passing, but as I sat at his funeral today I witnessed a beautiful love and joy he created around him. As those of us cried we broke for laughter in between the stories that were told by his many dear friends. Beautiful Poems were read that Marshall wrote and his childern spoke of there love and thankfulness for having Marsh as their Dad. I would like to thank Ami and Punita for helping him through his illness and for their strength. We will miss you Marsh, you left a little too soon, but have left us with many fond memories.

Marshall was a such a good man. He had a great personality and such a wondersul laugh. I will always remember how much he loved his kids. I hung out with him a lot a long time ago when Ramon, Ami and Nita were young. He told me how much he loved you guys so many times, and showed it with his actions. He was a good friend to me. Whenever I was at a party or ran into him we would always find ourselves talking together at length. He was so learned and full of creativity. I will miss him as will everyone else who knew him. We will always have good memories of him.

Many years ago, I had the good fortune, or as I came to know it later, my Karma, to move in into a unit of a duplex next to Marshall Frey on Mary street. Little did I know at the time, that it was the beginning in awareness for me, of the path we are all travelling.

Marshall it turns out would be my first Dharma teacher. Through him, I first came to know the teachings of the East. Through his intellect, kindness and efforts, I met others and read of others who would continue to guide me on the path.

Marshall had the knack for making just about any occasion fun and relevant, whether it was climbing trees, riding motorcycles, going to the Monkey Jungle, or travelling through the country. I still remember his infectious and joyful laughter on these occasions and so many others.

I will always remember Marshall with love in my heart, grateful for his kindness and the Karmic bond we shared.
