MIDDLETOWN — Esther Jeanette (Mathison) Zehrung, 85, Middletown, died Jan. 26, 2010, at Middletown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center from Alzheimer's disease.
She was born Jan. 29, 1924, in New Castle, to Nannie (Steppe) and Magnus Mathison. Esther was raised in Anderson, graduating in 1942 from Anderson High School.
She taught at Anderson Business College and worked until retiring in 1994 as an auditor with the state of Indiana in Muncie.
Esther attended and taught Sunday school at Mounds Baptist Church, and was an enthusiastic lifelong Christian believer. She was a very happy, optimistic people person who made friends easily and brought out the best in all she met. She will be sorely missed!
She is survived by her sons, Douglas Zehrung of Middletown and Danny Zehrung of Madison; sisters, Ruth Flanagan and Pauline Rayl of California, and Irene Lowe of Florida; brother, Clarence Mathison of Pendleton; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Zehrung; her youngest of three sons, Donald Lee Zehrung; and grandson, Chad Allen Zehrung.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes and Crematory, South Chapel, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson, with Pastor Steve Wilkinson officiating. Burial will be in East Maplewood Cemetery, Anderson, section 36.
Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Monday at the South Chapel.

Esther was my neighbor across the street in River Park Estates. She was also my instructor from the Indiana Business College. She would help anyone and everyone she could. What a wonderful and caring lady she was. My sympathy to her family.

Mrs. Zehrung was one of my teachers at Indiana Business College. I have always remembered her fondly as not only a wonderful teacher but also very kind and caring towards her students. She was a lovely lady. My condolences to Mrs. Zehrung's family.
