Janet Wetstone Obituary

Wetstone, Janet
Meyerson
Apr. 19, 1928 - Feb. 20, 2013
In 1967, Atlanta housewife Jan Wetstone invented Mod Podge while experimenting with short-cuts to decoupage in her antique shop. It proved to be one of the most enduring successes in the history of the craft industry. Jan was an early advocate for women's rights in the business world. She secured two patents, one for Mod Podge and one for a molded frame-maker kit. Jan was actively involved in the arts, especially in Sarasota where she founded the children's arts festival at the Ringling Museum.
Jan passed peacefully on February 20, 2013. She was a loving mother and grandmother and is survived by one brother, Gerald Meyerson of Charleston, SC, three children, Linda Lloyd of Powder Spring, GA, Greg Wetstone of Bethesda, MD and John Wetstone of Munich, Germany, and five grandchildren, Lisa and Katie Wetstone, Forrest and Camilla Sherman, and Andrea Sherman Rowe.
She was born April 19, 1928 in Spartanburg, SC to Louis and Ella Meyerson and attended the University of Missouri. After growing up in South Carolina, Jan moved to Atlanta where she resided until 1982 when she relocated to Sarasota and lived there happily until 2009 when she returned to Atlanta.
A memorial service for friends and family will be held this spring in Charleston, SC, where much of Jan's family resides. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Art Center Sarasota (www.artsarasota.org).

Dear, John, Greg & Linda- Your mom will be and is so missed by all in our family. She really was like an Aunt to us and has always been a true friend to my parents and my sisters. I miss her very much. She is very loved and raised three great kids besides doing so many other things with her life. She is definately one of a kind.

Much love, Pam

My deepest sympathy to all of Jan's family. I met Jan years ago in Atlanta and visited her in Sarasota. I was so happy when she moved back to Atlanta and we were able to see each other again. I shall miss her.

Jan was a remarkable and original woman. Filled with incredible energy, she tackled life with enthusiasm. She was particularly active in the arts, bringing new inventions into the world. She was equally involved in politics, ready to go to bat for philosophies in which she believed. We loved her and we miss her. She was a grand lady who will long be remembered.

Jan was a second mother to me. She was a daughter of the South with a heart as big as the West. Our love and condolences to your families. Bob and Inez Liftig

Jan was a woman who was smart, brave and bold. She was intelligent and creative. Her product development of Mod Podge, which is an all time standard in the retail craft industry, is a testimony to her tenacity. She was a strong political activist and worked hard to make a better world. She had a love for art and beauty that was very special and she shared this with the community in Sarasota. She raised three wonderful children and was adored by her five granddaughters. She was one of the truest friends my mother ever had. She was very special to our family. She will be missed, but we have great memories of our time with her. My deepest sympathy to her family.

Jan's Family, I met Jan through Doris and Paul Paver's family. I am Randa's friend. Jan was always fun to be around and her enthusiasm for living and engaging with people was evident from the first time I met her. What a lovely woman and human being. My prayers and thoughts are with her whole family.
