Maurice Eskowitz Obituary

MAURICE ESKOWITZ, 87, passed away on July 4, 2013 after a brief illness.
Maurice was born in Galveston on December 4, 1925. His family moved to Houston when he was 10. He graduated from Jeff Davis High School in January, 1943 at the age of 16 and started at the University of Houston the next month. On February 22, 1944, he went into the Army, in which he proudly served for the next 2 years. During his tenure in World War II, he served in the Philippines and Korea and was discharged from the Army in May, 1946, having received 6 medals.
Upon his return to Houston, he continued his education at the University of Houston. He graduated in 1950 in the first pharmacy class from U of H. This was the fulfillment of a lifelong ambition to become a pharmacist, and over the years, he proudly watched as the University of Houston Pharmacy School grew.
Maurice began his career at Walgreens, followed by many years at Jones Apothecary. In 1969, he and a partner bought Balfanz Pharmacy, which became White Oak Pharmacy. They later expanded with D&M Pharmacy, and they successfully ran both drugstores for many years.
Maurice married Inez Kaufman in 1952, and they were married for almost 61 years. His wife, children, and grandchildren were the most important things to him, and he always got great satisfaction from their achievements.
Maurice was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Adele Eskowitz. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Inez Eskowitz; his beloved children, Sheryl, Bruce, and Barbara Eskowitz; his adoring grandsons, Marshall and Kevin Eskowitz; his loving sister, Reba Magids; and nieces and nephews.
He will be remembered for his devotion and love of family, his sharp intellect, his love of basketball, and his pride in his profession. He will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 7 at 2:00 pm at Congregation Beth Yeshurun, 4525 Beechnut. Burial will follow at Beth Yeshurun Cemetery on Post Oak.
The family requests that donations be made to Congregation Beth Yeshurun, Houston Hospice, or a charity of your choice.

So proud to have known Maurice and been allowed to call him our friend. He was a kind and gentle man and so easy to visit with. May God bless and watch over his family as they adjust to the absence of his daily presence.
