Arthur Farley Obituary

Arthur J. Farley
1939-2015
Arthur J. Farley, M.D., died Wednesday, June 17, 2015, in Austin, Texas. He was born on November 1, 1939, in Lidderdale, Iowa, the son of Elden Roger Farley and Irene Collison Farley. He graduated from Bellaire High School in 1958 and from the University of Houston in 1963. He received his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, in June of 1967. He interned at Moffitt Hospital in San Francisco and did his residency in Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatry at UCLA in Los Angeles. He served in the United States Army, at Madigan General Hospital, Fort Lewis, Washington, in 1969 and 1970.
Before beginning medical school in September of 1963, Art married Harriette Jones on August 24, 1963. Art is survived by his wife, Harriette, and two daughters of whom they are very proud, Eleanor Farley Moore and her husband, Darren Moore, and Hannah Farley Long. They have three grandchildren, Taylor Moore, Austin Moore and Arton Long. He is also survived by his siblings, Cora Bartholomew, Roger Farley, Cathy Anderson, Mark Farley and Barbara Wolf.
Art and Harriette moved to Houston, Texas, from California in 1976 where Art practiced Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis for 36 years. He retired in 2012. He was a tireless advocate for mental health issues and served as an officer or committee chair as a member of the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians, The American Psychoanalytic Association, The American Psychiatric Association, and many other associations at the national, state and county level. He and Diane Manning, Ph.D., established The New School in the Heights, which serves students and their families in providing an alternative educational experience.
Art was an avid sportsman, having been introduced to fishing and hunting by Harriette's father and her brother-in-law, Jack McGinty. Art and Jack, along with many other fishing and hunting buddies, had wonderful trips all over the United States and beyond. Art also enjoyed kayaking along Lake Bird Lake and along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.
A private celebration of Art's life will be held at a later time. Memorials in Art's name may be sent to The New School in the Heights, 403 Heights Boulevard, Houston, Texas, 77007, or to the charity of your choice.

Miss Dr. Farley all the time. He helped me personally, with my 2 sons and in ways that helped me change my life. I have never met anyone like him. His #1 Mom (what he called me) will forever be grateful and appreciative. Now my two are adults and we are all blessed to have known him and attending New School & his tutelage as the BEST parent helper.

Dr. Farley made a life long positive impact on me and both my sons. My oldest went on to get his Masters & is now a GREAT THERAPIST. My youngest has been with HEB 8 years. My adult sons show me that the Farley way works. Teachers, parents, therapists are are equally important. I will hopefully be opening a school for special kids in the Greater Houston Area. Warm regards,
Toby, Corey and Jacob Helfand

His teachings and his legacy continue. I still hear him telling me to use my smart brain versus allowing my emotions, feelings, hopefulness to rule my decisions. He called me his #1 Mom but his teachings have helped all parts of my life. His legacy continues at the Lucy Daniels Center. Wish it were more widespread because we would have a different world. Everyone is capable of change & learning & confronting their past to live a joyful & meaningful life. Many choose not to do the work, open their eyes and their minds. His teachings and lessons I learned are still with me. Wishing ALL peace, love, strength, serenity, tranquility, GRATEFULNESS and joy. No one said life is easy. It is only how we each choose to live it and treat others. We each have the right to choose health and not toxicity.

His legacy, his wonderful stories & lessons taught through those stories radiate and shine in my life to this day. I was on the Board of the New School. I was saddened when it closed. The center at the Lucy Daniels Center named after he and Dr. Manning is carrying on his legacy. He called me his #1 Mom. I was a willing student. To me, he was the wisest & most impactful influence on me and my healing and my being the parent I chose and wanted to be. Change is always possible as is learning and growth. It is a choice I bravely & courageously made. Dr. Manning was the same for my youngest son. Even now, I hear him saying to me "Use your very smart brain". I miss him but his legacy lives & I continue to pay if forward. Wishing all peace, love, strength, serenity, tranquility, kindness, wisdom & faith and GRATEFULNESS. I am so grateful to Dr. Farley and Dr. Manning. God Bless us all. ❤ ❤
P.S. life is not fair but how we live it and treat others should be an example of his teachings..both Dr. Farley & God. Live life fully with joy.

Dr. Farley and the wonderful school he started and lead are both sorely missed. His wonderful words and teachings live on in those he helped and taught. I know I am still experiencing the positive effects of his tutelage of me. I still hear his words daily of good enough, bit by bit, You are the adult, use your smart brain. Because of him and his empowerment, I was able to persevere against a NYSE oil company and win after 11 years, my youngest son is a gentle, loving, in control young man and working at HEB and my oldest made it thru college although his challenges continue. We ALL MISS YOU Dr. FARLEY but we hear your words still. Thank you again from your #1 Mom. We hope your loved ones and family are comforted in the impact you made and assured that we are paying it forward and passing it on. I asked Dr. Manning recently about his foundation and want to donate. Please contact her to let her know some causes I can help with that will help children like mine. Regards, Toby Berry Helfand

I have my own very personal reasons fir being greatly appreciative of Art. Condolences to his family and friends. May his memory be as a blessing.

It's difficult to express in words how much Dr. Farley helped me. I was his patient during my elementary school years, and this actions changed my life, and made me a better person-something I've only come to realize 10 years later.
I truly regret never getting the chance to say thank you. I don't know where I would be if he hadn't helped.

My condolences to Mrs. Farley and the Farley families on their loss.

I had the good fortune to be referred to Dr. Farley by Dr. Herman Staples of Philadelphia when I relocated to Houston 30 years ago, and to have Dr. Farley take me into psychoanalytic treatment with him, leading to a mid-life career change for me to do the kind of work they did.

Words cannot express the value to me of Dr. Farley's hard work in devotion to my emotional growth toward health, nor the depth of my own grief at learning -- some 15 years after last hearing his voice -- of his passing.

Dr. Farley saved my life years ago in Houston with therapy during a very dark time when I did not care if I lived or died. I would like to express my gratitude to all of his family for the support you must have given him while he was offering support to his patients.

I will always remember Art Farley's enthusiasm, sparkling smile and devotion to teaching and improvements in mental health care, particularly kids. Art was patient and helpful to two of our children. I enjoyed working with Art on Houston psychiatric society volunteer projects during which his wonderful sense of humor was so valuable. His spirit lives on in the lives he touched. Pete Olsson

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Art saved my life years ago through therapy when I was a teenager and I have never forgotten the caring and devotion he showed me during my time of difficulty. Dr Farley was a wonderful man and I am sure he helped many people throughout his career, but I wanted you to know what an impact he had on my life. I would not be the person I am today if I had not met him.

I will never forget Arthur Farley!
