Doris Fondren Lummis
1930-2015
Doris Fondren Lummis died peacefully at home on Friday, the 4th of December 2015, surrounded by her family. Born on the 20th of March 1930 in Houston, Texas to Doris Ledwidge and Walter William Fondren, Jr., "Dossy" attended The Kinkaid School and later The University of Texas at Austin where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Dossy was active in numerous charitable and social organizations throughout her lifetime. Her dedication to service was instilled in her at an early age when she and her maternal grandmother spent hours knitting sweaters to send to our troops overseas during World War II. Dossy continued to serve her community as a trustee of the Fondren Foundation until her death. She was also a longtime board member of Glenwood Cemetery and a special friend to the Brookwood Community. Dossy's greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Some of her happiest days were spent traveling with her grandchildren. She wanted them to experience the world and to develop tolerance along the way, but most importantly she created a strong bond among them that will never be broken. Dossy and her husband, William Rice Lummis, enjoyed spending time at their cherished home in Hunt, Texas, where they loved to entertain friends. She could throw a fabulous party!
Dossy was predeceased by her first husband and the father of her children, Edwin Allday, and by her daughter, Doris Allday Yates, and her son, Joseph Scott Allday. She is survived by her husband, William; her children: Robert Edwin Allday and wife Francey Pengra, Walter Fondren Allday, son-in-law Weldon Marshall Yates and wife Ellen, Jeanette Allday Thomas and husband Jeff, and Ellanor Allday Camberg and husband Roy; her step-children: Frederick Rice Lummis II and wife Claudia, Palmer Bradley Lummis and wife Gaylord, William Rice Lummis, Jr., and Ransom Clark Lummis and wife Isabel. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Eugene Perrin Allday, Blake Carlton Allday, Mirenda Yates Scarantino and husband Jesse, Ellanor Yates Cook and husband Brett, Emily Whitaker Chambers, William Zachary Chambers, Emily Yates Incerto and husband Patrick, Jeff Burke Thomas, Jr., Mary Catherine Thomas, Richard Bradley Beard, Jr. and wife Lindsey, Adelaide Fondren Beard, and William Dorey Beard; her step-grandchildren: Frederick Rice Lummis III and wife Amanda, Daniel Ross Lummis and wife Rene, Benjamin Nicholas Lummis, Katherine Merrill Lummis, Anne Lummis Wright and husband Doug, Palmer Bradley Lummis, Jr. and wife Mallory, Frances Ann Lummis, Louisa Rice Lummis, Margarett Brown Lummis, and Virginia Isabel Lummis; and numerous great grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.

The memorial service is to be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 9th of December at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston, where The Rev. Dr. Russell J. Levenson, Jr., Rector, and The Rev. Martin J. Bastian, Vice-Rector, are to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception at a venue to be announced during the service.
Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.

The family would like to express gratitude to Sandra Leslie, Nita, Wael and James for their care and love over the years. The family would also like to express thanks to the employees of Ultra Staff for their exceptional care during Dossy's final days. In lieu of usual remembrances, the family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to the Texas Heart Institute, Brookwood Community, or a
charity of one's choice.
