Charles Hearn Obituary

The Honorable Judge CHARLES J. HEARN, beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather and Friend went to be with his Lord and Savior, at the age of 72, on April 8, 2003. He passed away due to complications from an aneurysm in his heart.      He is survived by his wife of 25 years and best friend, Jeanette Dunn Hearn of Buchanan Dam, TX; daughters, Cindy Hearn Rackley and husband Russell of Lenexa, Kansas; Charlotte Hearn Reid and husband Tony of Odenton, MD; Rhonda Teague and Husband Jim of Humble, TX; sons, Duane Samford and wife Elaine of Humble, TX; and Darin Samford of Houston, TX; grandchildren Charles Reid, Matt Samford, Mike Samford, Justin Teague, Joel Reid, Allison Teague, and Lucas Rackley; Sister Mary Dale Andrews of Groves, TX and numerous relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by parents Samuel Emmett Hearn Sr., and Hassie Whitaker Hearn; siblings S.E. Hearn, Jimmy Hearn and Frances Calhoun; and son Charles Richard Hearn.      Charlie was born in Port Arthur, Texas on March 20, 1931 and Graduated from Jefferson High School in Port Arthur in 1950. In 1962 he received a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Houston, and Graduated from South Texas College of Law in 1967. He served in the U.S.A.F. from 1950 to 1953 and Retired from the U.S.A.F. Reserves as a Lt. Colonel in 1991. He practiced Law from 1967 with emphasis on criminal justice until he was elected Judge of the 263rd District Court in 1978. He served as Administrative Judge of the Criminal Division of the District Court from 1987 - 1991 and ran unopposed throughout his tenure until his retirement in 1992. His passion for serving as a Judge kept him busy sitting as a visiting Judge throughout the state of Texas after his retirement.      There was no one who loved life and people more than he did. This was evident in the numerous groups, clubs, and community service organizations he was involved with. He was a Lifetime Director and member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo as well as Past Chairman of the Calf Scramble Committee. Throughout the years he has served on the Board of Directors for Family Time Foundation, and as a member and President of the Lions Club. He was a 32nd degree Mason and was honored as a Knight Commander of the Court of Honor. He was a very proud member of the Tejas Vaqueros for 23 years, and a long time member of First Assembly of God church in Humble.      As important as it was for Charlie to serve in the community, his greatest passion was serving his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was an outstanding man of Honor, Integrity and Great Faith, and will be missed by all.      If ever asked how he was doing, he always answered, "I am Blessed". As a friend, family member or just acquaintance one would have to say of knowing Charles J. Hearn, "I am Blessed".      Funeral services and a Celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, April 12th, at the First Assembly of God Church in Humble, Texas at 10:00 a.m., with interment at Forest Park Cemetery on Lawndale. Visitation will be Friday April 11th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at First Assembly of God Church in Humble. Pallbearers are, sons Duane and Darin Samford, grandsons, Matt and Mike Samford, Justin Teague, Charles and Joel Reid, and nephew Jonathan Dunn. Honorary Pallbearers will be all District Court Judges of Harris County.      In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship Fund, the charity of your choice or give the gift of blood in his memory.

One of my first memories of Uncle Charlie was when he and Nannette were first married. I would "runaway" and go down to their house all the time(everyday as I can remember)I felt as if I "belonged" there.I recall being there when he came home from work one day and he had brought"ME"a card and a bag of candy. He had me wrapped from that moment on.Of course by the end of the day Daddy would always call and say"Charlie"send her home,in which he lovingly did and said"I will see you tomorrow" always with a hug and kiss. This is one of MY fondest memories and I just wanted to share.Uncle Charlie I Love You and you will be so missed.

During the first few years of Charlie & my Mom's marriage, I introduced him as my stepdad. As any young kid, I wasn't sure what to think of this new man in our lives. As the years went by I began to love & respect him more. Especially the way he provided for my family and my mom. But, in the last few years is when I finally realized what a great friend Charlie was to me. We got to spend a lot of time together the last few years, and that's when he went from stepfather to dad and friend. We had some great times together. Especially when we went to dinner together or just hung out and watched a game. Charlied liked to eat as much as I do. It was like hanging out with one of my best friends. I'm going to miss him, but I know I am a better man for having known him.

Love,

Your "baby son"

Jeanne,

The service on Saturday left Wes and I in awe of Charlie. We were both inspired by his life and how he affected those he was around. It was obvious that he has touched hundreds of people with his presence here on earth. Now he is in the presence of our SAVIOR. I know that he is greatly missed by all who knew him.

Our love and prayers are with you...

I had the honor of calling Charlie "My Dad" for 25 years. I have so many things I can give him credit for in my life I couldn't possibly begin to list them all. He was a man that taught me dignity, class, respect and most of all how a man can serve his Lord and Savior in his everday walk. He was never ashamed to share his belief and love for Jesus Christ. I can never recall a time he ever raised his voice to me, not to say he never corrected me, however he always did it in love. He was a wonderful husband to my mom and a terrific Grandpaw to my sons and he loved my wife as if she were his own daughter. He will be missed more than he would have ever believed. Thank you for your love for me and my family and know for sure we will see you soon.

Love,

Your son,

Duane

I was Judge Hearn's probation officer for many years. He will always be a very special person in my heart. I did not appreciate the depth of his love for the Lord until I began my walk. His words and prayers continue to be an inspiration to all who knew him. I was very proud to witness on his behalf this past Sunday. Many great people leave many legacies, but not many will be remembered for using their faith as a guide in their personal and professional life. What a great tribute to a great man!

Jeanette,

Iwas so sorry to hear of John's passing but have no doubt that he is in the same place that Bernie is. He really helped us with a diffucult situation while we were at Evangelistic Temple. May God bless you. I know it is a difficult time for you and will keep you in my prayers.

I had the honor and privilege to have known Judge Hearn. He was the first judge that I had ever met and was fortunate to be trained in his court when I started working for the District Clerk's office in January of 1979. I was in awe of him!!! Judge Hearn was the epitome of class. Always a kind word to anyone he met, even the inmates. Even after I left his court, he continued to be a good friend, always stopping just to say hello, to give a hug and always had comforting words.

His love for the Lord always came through whenever he spoke. His eyes would always shine when asked about Jeanne and his family. He was so proud of his family and loved them dearly. We can take comfort in knowing that he is with his Father for we know he is home and truly happy. Yes, "I am blessed" for having known Judge Hearn. It is the judicial system's loss.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Uncle Charlie may you rest in peace, Your absence will be our loss. You gave us all such love and compassion, and we shall never forget that.

Charlie was the type of man who never met a stranger. His love for the Lord was obvious to each and every person who came in contact with him because he treated each and every person with respect and compassion.

Charlie was like a father to me in so many ways and I will always hold him in the same high regard that I hold my own father to. My sons did not even realize that Charlie wasn't really their grandpa until they were teenagers. That was Charlie, everyone was family!

The angels are singing and rejoicing in welcoming a true solider of God home to his loving Heavenly Father.

Charlie, we will keep an eye on Jeannie for you from here on the ground while you keep an eye on her from Heaven.

We love you!

Charlie was much more than a father-in-law to me. He was a mentor and a friend. Charlie always encouraged me to strive for the highest goals and not to settle for less. He inspired my love of the law and our justice system. He was generous with his time and his love. Charlie lived by example and I know he will be greatly missed.
