Kathy Burney Obituary

On July 28, 2009, KATHY SELLERS BURNEY made her eternal dancing debut with the angels following a courageous 9-year battle with breast cancer. At the onset of her valiant struggle, Kathy's prayer was to see the youngest of her four children graduate from high school. God answered that prayer with three college graduates, a University of Texas sophomore, the marriage of her beautiful daughter, the birth of a precious granddaughter and another grandbaby on the way. Throughout her illness, Kathy was tirelessly supported by Bill Burney, her loving husband and life partner of 36 years, her children, Brent Burney, Brooke Burney Zarr, Mark Burney and Mike Burney, son-in-law Jeff Zarr, her granddaughter, Riley Kate Zarr, her mother, Lovie Sellers Dixon, and her sister, Sherry Sellers. Preceding Kathy into God's hands were her father, Clarence Sellers, and her younger brother, Scott Sellers. Kathy was personified by her compassion for her friends and their families, particularly during times of distress. To that end, she demonstrated her care and support through letters of encouragement as well as her personal touch which manifested itself in so many ways. Kathy was an incredible dancer and loved all things musical. Her spirit illuminated all who knew her through song, dance, practical jokes, and most of all, her infectious, heartfelt laughter. As an ardent college football fan, Kathy especially enjoyed the Fall season, and over the years she was ever-present at her kids' numerous sporting events. Kathy was an active member of Chapelwood Methodist Church, Angels in the Kitchen (Chapelwood), SAE Moms' Association, Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, University of Texas Parents' Association Board, Lakeside Country Club Women's Board, and a dedicated and vibrant Bible study participant. Kathy and her family send particular thanks to Dr. Massimo Cristofanilli and his staff at M.D. Anderson Hospital for their professional support and friendship during her difficult journey. A visitation will be held in the parlor at Chapelwood United Methodist Church from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Sunday, August 2, 2009. A celebration of Kathy's life will be held at Chapelwood Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay, Houston, Texas 77024 on Monday, August 3, 2009 at 1:00 PM with Dr. Jim Jackson officiating. Following the service, family and friends will be received in the Fellowship Hall at Chapelwood. Honorary Pallbearers: Larry Barbles, "Pops" Burney, Mike Crockett, Dale Hortenstine, Jody Lane, Jack Lee, Dr. Jim Muntz, Craig Plumhoff, Bob Walker, Jeff Zarr. Memorial Gifts honoring Kathy can be made to: Nellie B. Connally Breast Cancer Center care of MD Anderson/Kathy Burney PO Box 4486, Houston, Texas 77210-4486 or call 713.792.3450 or CanCare of Houston (www.cancare.org).

Dear Burney, Sellers and Dixon Families,
I had the honor to be one of Kathy's friends from junior high school through college. After college we lost touch but I thought of her and always loved her. We had a 40th high school reunion recently (W.T.White '69) and she was remembered and thought of. All of you are in my heart and prayers. It is wonderful to know that she was so loved by her family and friends.

Heaven will never be the same with Kathy there. She'll have everyone dancing and singing. I was hoping to be skinny in heaven, but she'll have donuts at all our gatherings and I won't be able to resist. She will be so missed on this earth, but the saints in heaven are rejoicing.

Dear Bill and family members,
Craig and I extend our sympathy to you. Although I did not know Kathy well, I observed her at the SAE Mom's weekend and saw a beautiful peaceful calm woman who appeared to be content. Surely she is in His presence now and able to praise her Lord in song and dance. Our sons, William and George hope to support their SAE Burney brothers and we pray that the God of ALL comfort will surround you now and always.
