John Ventura Obituary

JOHN VENTURA, a consumer law attorney and a nationally-known author, died in Houston on October 28, 2008 at the age of 65. As a young boy John spent his high school years in a Catholic seminary dreaming of becoming a priest so he could help people. After graduating however, John decided to achieve his dream by combining journalism with the law. He envisioned providing ordinary people with affordable, caring legal services and educating them about how to use the law to protect their rights and avoid legal trouble. In pursuit of this goal, John earned an undergraduate degree in journalism and a law degree from the University of Houston. After graduating from law school, John and his legal partner built one of the most successful consumer bankruptcy firms in Texas. When that partnership ended, John took over the firm's law offices in Brownsville, McAllen and Harlingen and began the Law Offices of John Ventura. He provided caring, compassionate advice to numerous financially-stressed consumers and became a highly visible bankruptcy attorney in the Rio Grande Valley, hosting a weekly radio show and a newspaper column on small business legal issues for many years. After he sold his law firm, John returned to Houston where he became Executive Director of the Texas Consumer Complaint Center at the University of Houston Law School and an Associate Professor at the school. John also developed a very successful second career as an author, authoring or co-authoring 17 books on a variety of consumer and small business topics over 19 years, including several books in the popular For Dummies series. John is survived by three brothers, Frank, Sam and Steve, and by nine children, Wendy, Misty, Colorado, Mike, Brendon, Ashley, Jill, Erica and Stephanie. A memorial service is being held Saturday at 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers and per John's request, contributions can be made to the Texas Consumer Complaint Center, 100 Law Center, Houston TX 77204-6060.

My deepest sympathy to the Ventura family and to his friends, colleagues and mentees whose lives were enhanced by John. John was a man of his word. He was generous, creative and full of a desire to live a happy life. He loved people.

We will miss the emails and text messages he often signed off on in the wee hours of the morning. The creative side of John’s brain started working hours before the rest of the world rolled out of bed. John spent his days helping those less fortunate and his afternoons laughing with friends and watching movies.

John’s legacy is one of helping people, of humility, and of making everyone he came into contact with feel special. I hope to leave as big an imprint on half as many lives as he touched.

I am deeply sadden by the passing of Mr.Ventura . He was such a kind compassionate man. Mr Ventura was my customer at the post office. He was usually the first in line every morning. As he mailed his books,we often talked about life and family. One morning I mentioned a legal issued I was having. At this time I did'nt even know he was an attorney.
He immediately offered to help me. Not only did he help, but even while hospitalize he had one of his students to follow up and make sure that the issue was resolved. Often when working with the public you're treated as just a servant. Mr.Ventura treated me as friend. I will never forget him.

My heart is broken.

Rest in peace,my friend.

John was a great boss and mentor, and an inspiration to all of the law students who worked with him. He was also a great person, with that unique combination of being a genuinely nice guy and having a good sense of humor at that same time. He was loved, and will be missed.

I am sincerely thankful to John for his kindness to my mother in helping her resolve issues concerning the home I was born in. Even though I didn't know him personally, John's humanity and compassion for others touched my heart dearly. On behalf of myself and the Covenant House Faith Community, I wish John a peaceful rest and his family comfort in this trying time. John was definitely an example of our Christian faith put into action. Here is to a man who truly lived the gospel. May God bless his family.

I feel privileged to have learned from such an accomplished man who taught me what respecting a client was all about. He taught me to listen to my clients and their needs. He taught me what client counseling truly was. He reminded me that no task was too big or small to take on. And because of him in my career I know I will be a better attorney. Little did I imagine when I signed up to participate in the Consumer Complaint Center that my life would be forever changed by Professor Ventura, but it was. John believed in me and trusted me. John reminded me that hard work and dedication win out in the end. But it was not just the legal skills he taught with such grace, it was the conversations in his office about life, aspirations, family and goals that also impacted and forever changed me.

John exemplified what every professor in both the law and other fields should strive to be -- compassionate. John was a mentor and friend to me who forever left an impression on my heart. I feel lucky to have had such an amazing professor, but even more lucky to have known John.

John will be forever missed and remembered.
