Casey Williams Obituary

Edward Carson Williams, Jr., (Casey), noted Houston artist and beloved husband and dad, died from encephalitis caused by West Nile virus on New Year's Day, 2013 in Houston, Texas. He was 65.
Casey was born in 1947 in Houston to Dr. Edward Carson Williams, professor of Urology at Herman Hospital and Margaret Turner Williams. His grandfather was Dr. Ben Weems Turner, M.D., Houston's first medical specialist and founder of the Turner Urological Clinic. Casey was an alumnus of Lamar High School and The University of Texas at Austin, where he met his wife Jo Ann. They moved to San Francisco in 1974, where he earned an MFA in Photography at the San Francisco Art Institute. He taught photography at The University of North Texas and returned to Houston in the late 70s to start the photography department for Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston. While living in Austin in the 80s, he taught photography at St. Edward's University and at The University of Texas San Antonio. In Houston, he taught photography for Rice University's Continuing Education Department. His awards include a residency with Lightworks, Syracuse, NY, a visiting artist position at UT San Antonio, and Photographer of the Year, 2005 for Houston Center for Photography.
His work is a part of the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, Laguna Gloria Art Museum, Austin, TX, and the Gernsheim Collection at The University of Texas. His current show, "Within" is on exhibition at the Holly Johnson Gallery, Dallas, TX through February 16, 2013.
Aside from his work, Casey was well known for his irreverent humor, wit, and charm. He was an avid music lover and audiophile and a major supporter of Nameless Sound. He collected vintage German cars, was a surfer, and as a teen in the late 60s, was perhaps the first dealer of Greg Noll custom surfboards in Houston. In pursuit of the perfect wave, he and his wife Jo Ann spent months traveling through Mexico before marrying in the town hall of Guadalajara, Jalisco in 1972.
Casey leaves behind his wife Jo Ann, founder of ArtBridge Houston, children Margot Williams and Carson Williams, his sister Margo Connolly, brother in law Michael Connolly, and niece Megan Connolly.
A memorial service will be held at the Rothko Chapel on Tuesday January 8th at 4:00 p.m. Those attending are encouraged to arrive early, as seating is limited.
The Williams family, with deepest gratitude, would like to thank the exceptional staff who cared for him at Select Specialty Hospital.
In Casey's honor, please make donations to Nameless Sound http://www.namelesssound.org and ArtBridge Houston http://artbridgehouston.org.

Dear Joann, Margot, and Carson,

I was shocked and deeply saddened to just learn of Casey's passing this weekend when I visited with Roya at her gallery, where I went to see Joann's jewelry. I am so, so sorry. There are no words....

You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Kelsey and Robbie are deeply saddened as well and share in your sorrow.

JoAnn, Our wonderful impromptu visit with you and Casey in Marfa seems such a short while ago. No words can express the sorrow, but memories held in the heart can ease the pain. Love to you and your family.

For Jo Ann, Margot and Carson
We are so sad to know that Casey has left us all, what a kind, gentle man, brave man who always took time to visit, listen, laugh and yes take many photos of everyone within 2inches of him :) he always captured life as it happened, and made everyone smile.
We are so lucky to have pictures he took of Camille, we have one on our wall, where it will stay.
Though, we don't see you as much, now that we are not in Marfa full time, we think and talk about your family all the great memories we have together, we are blessed to have known Casey. Every time I pet our new kitty, I think of how much he loved our cats in Marfa, I wish he could have met Taco.
We hope we can the 3 of you soon.
Love and hugs
Ree, Jason and Camille (Marfa /Dallas)

“There is a land of the living and a land of the dead and the bridge is love, the only survival, the only meaning.” ?Thornton Wilder
Your love came to us by the cornucopiaful: overflowing generosity, photos to remember who we were, to remember that it was all better than it seemed, and, of course, by way of jambalaya . A more beautiful soul there never was. Thank you, Casey. Your love echoes on.

What a talented and sweet man who practiced the highest level of artistic endeavor in his chosen medium. With his loving wife Joann by his side he was a cheerful and giving individual to so many in the art world. He loved his family and the artists in the Houston community. You will be missed with your twinkling sense of humor and love for humankind. Wtith love to the Williams family at this time.

Dearest Casey,
What a special place in my heart that you have. A welcome to Texas! You were always so warm and welcoming. As an artist, you had that questioning, that special eternal sence of not knowing. Willing to be in that strange place of in between and discovery. Thank you for the lessons that you gave to me and so many others. Thank you for your lush and exquisite art. You gifted us all, in so many ways, and still more to come. As time has a way of showing us, those that were so close, like you, are beacons to the future. Thank you Casey for your beautifull vision. My love is with Jo Ann and your children, and all that you touched. Know you will hold special moments for me, and many others. Thank you, for gifting us.

It seems like only yesterday that I came upon all four Williamses sitting in the sunshine outside La Guadalupana, and we talked about food and travels and dreams. I remember marveling at the brilliance and beauty and cohesion of each one and the all of you... Casey truly had "eyes to see" and he let us all in on it--quietly, graciously and generously. What a blessing for us! God bless you during this very sad time.

How sad. Casey, you were my big brother. So glad I got to tell you that about a year ago. I bought my first surfboard from you---a Greg Noll. Thanks to you, my first car was a BMW 2002, in 1974 when most Texans had never heard of BMW. You and your family have been wonderful friends for 50+ years. You will be missed. God bless you,
Woody T.

Love to all and our deepest heart felt sympathy to you, Jo, Margot, Carson and "Big Margot" and family - we will always remember Casey with fondest and think of him as the constant photographer with his cameras slung around his neck looking for just the right scene to click - and you would never know what it might be!
