Jewell Rhodes Harris, 97, born April 28, 1922 in Groveton, Texas died peacefully May 24, 2019 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A memorial service will be held at Ministers for Christ Christian Center, 5208 South Acres Drive, Houston, TX 77048 on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at 11:00 am. Memorial donations in Jewell's name may be made to S.H.A.P.E. Community Center, P O Box 8428, Houston, TX 77288-8428.

The Gods and Goddesses brought two extraordinary women to me. Jewell was a masterful griot whose talents were bountiful. I found her risqué jokes hilarious and Jewell met by bawdy humor with giggles and genteel incredulity. She prayed for traveling grace for every global journey that helped bring me safely home. Adoration, love and care for Jewell was effortless and rewarding. In our 24 year friendship she never displayed anger, scorn, contempt or meanness. Jewell faced her last days with marvelous courage, kindness and peace. She shed no tears, made no demands and had no complaints. We would often ask Jewell, "how are you"? "Fine and dandy and sweet as candy" was her response. Indeed.

Jewell was my mother's best friend for over 50 years, and when my mother passed away 17 years ago, Jewell became my best friend. I could talk to her about anything. I miss our talks and I wish I could have one more hour with her. Jewell was the embodiment of love and compassion which she shared with everyone she knew. She was such a blessing to everyone in my family. May she rest in the Loving arms of Jesus, her Lord and Savior forever.
