Joe Rogers Obituary

JOE M. ROGERS, JR. After a valiant three-year battle with cancer, Joe M. (Joey) Rogers, Jr. passed away peacefully on February 9, 2003. Joey was born in Houston on 11/12/51 and graduated from Waltrip High School. From the time he was very young his mechanical ability was obvious. He fondly recalled the time he spent working on cars with his grandfather "Pop". Joey spent his career in the geophysical business with his father, Joe Rogers, Sr., and for the past decade operated Bellaire Industries. Joey's passion was racing. He traveled many miles participating in boat races throughout the country. The shiny red 1931 roadster he re-built won best Streetrod at the Auto Show. Joey was a generous friend to all and a devoted husband and father. He found the perfect partner in Deana. His four children were his pride and joy. To them he has left a wonderful legacy of love, devotion and memories of happy times that will last forever. Joey is survived by his wife, Deana, and their four children, Wesley, Matt, Trae and Brittney; his grandfather, Morris Wells, his mother Barbara Rogers, his father and step-mother Joe and Kathi Rogers, his sister and brother-in-law, Dianna and Eddie Richards, his brothers and sisters-in-law, Steve and Pam Rogers, and Robert and Nancy Rogers, his brother Joel Rogers, his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Shelley and Dave Mickels, and Jenny and Matt Cowan, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mary Ellen and Charlie Rion, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will begin at 1:00 Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003 at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 8101 Senate Avenue, with a memorial service to follow at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family has requested contributions to an account for the benefit of Deana and the children at Sterling Bank, Northwest Freeway.

To the Rogers Family:

I knew Joe through the boat races with the SDBA. As Ron stated above, I did not hear about his death until a few days ago and was deeply saddened. I was the staging manager for the SDBA for several years and the impression left in my mind is of Joe and Kyle Walker and their "ritual" when Kyle went to the water. Without saying a word, I knew, as did others, when to step away from the boat and let Joe finish strapping Kyle in to the boat and give him the last handshake before launch.

He is a great person and will be truly missed.

Deana,

Just wanted to tell you how sorry I was to hear about Joey. I did not know about it until Dragboat Review came out. Really enjoyed the weekend at Marble Falls last summer when I got to talk to him and hang around most of the weekend with you & him. Joey was a special person, always friendly and someone I looked forward to seeing at the races. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him and respected him. Hope to see you sometime in the future.
