Robert Hicks Obituary

Robert Wayne Hicks CWO/W4 USAF (Retired) Our father, grandfather and great-grandfather Robert W. Hicks, "Wayne" 86 of Antelope, Calif. passed away Feb. 15, 2008. Dad was a career military officer having served almost 29 years in the Army-Air Corp and the United States Air Force. During his career he traveled all over the world and in each of the fifty states and was assigned to numerous duty stations in England, Alaska, California, Maine, France, Pennsylvania and Thailand. One of six children of Fred and Florence Hicks, he was born Dec. 19, 1921 in Rocky Ford, Mo. and moved to Bartlesville, Okla. when he was six. His father fought with the famed Rainbow Division in W.W.I who died as a result of a fall from scaffolding while working for Phillips Petroleum in Oklahoma when dad was only eight years old. Our father was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp for two years and enlisted in the Army-Air Corp in 1941. He was transferred to England in 1942 where he met and married his bride of 59 years and the love of his life, Evelyn (Emily) Barron Checkley. He retired from active military service in 1970 but continued on in a civilian capacity for almost 5 years whereupon he and mom moved to Brookings, Ore. where they lived on an idyllic acre of land near the Pacific Ocean called "Eve's Eden" for over 24 years. Mom's health necessitated a return to California in 1999 and she passed away in March of 2002. Surviving our father is his brother Fred of Bartlesville, Okla.; daughter Cheryl and her husband Larry Attaway of Granite Bay, Calif.; son John and his wife Jean of Lakewood, Wash.; son David and his wife Dorothy of Rocklin, Calif. and son Michael and his wife Sharon of Boise. Dad also leaves behind four grandchildren; Amanda Hicks of Greenwood, S. C.; Dana Gilbert of Sacramento, Calif.; Matthew Hicks of Twin Falls, Idaho and Morgan Hicks of Boise as well as great-grandchildren, Kylie and Madison (and soon to be born Brady) of Twin Falls, Idaho and Mikayla and Hayden of Boise. Dad was a modest man who loved our beautiful mother, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his roses, golf and old time country music. He was loved and will be missed. A military service will be held at the Veterans Cemetery in Boise on a date to be announced.
