Margaret Blythe Obituary

Margaret Jane Blythe

Indianapolis - (1947-2018)

Margaret Jane Blythe, 71, passed peacefully at home on April 18. Maggie was loved by many.

Married 45 years and from Clarksville, Indiana, she met her husband, Jerry, as first-year medical students at Indiana University, where they enjoyed studying and running together in Dunn Meadow. Maggie won the first Indianapolis Joggers' Day for women in 1976, seven months pregnant.

Maggie worked many years at the Indiana University School of Medicine and was Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics, Clinical Gynecology and Adolescent Medicine. She served as Chairperson for the National Committee on Adolescence for the American Academy of Pediatrics, and represented the Academy of Pediatrics for the US House of Representatives and at the Institute of Medicine. She was instrumental in founding the first Adolescent Medical services in Indiana, and initiated a network of Outreach clinics in Indianapolis public schools, as well as facilitating health care services at Indiana juvenile detention centers. In 2017 she continued her work with Southern Indiana Physicians.

Maggie was a trailblazer. She received the 2009 Indiana Commission of Women's Torchbearer Award, given to Indiana women "who have overcome barriers to equality and been pioneers in their industries." She was included among the Best Doctors in America throughout her practice years.

Maggie grew up in the Methodist church, began each day with prayer, and reflected in her final few weeks that her favorite verse was Philippians 4:13. Maggie's kindness, humility, and strength resonated throughout her life, a role model to many. She was the oldest of seven, and is survived by her husband Jerry, son Matthew, daughter Laura, son-in-law Anthony, and two grandchildren, Ailuen and Aili.

She asked Memorial contributions be made to the Riley Children's Foundation at: http://www.rileykids.org/ways-to-give/donate.html. Calling is on Friday April 27 from 4 to 7pm at Leppert Mortuary, 740 East 86th St. Indianapolis. Service is on Saturday April 28 at 1 pm at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 100 West 86th St.

Dr.Blythe was my adolescent doctor through my teens. I didn´t know she has gone too soon. She was kindly one of the best. Always listened & gave her best. I recommend her to many young women I knew in my teens years. She definitely will never be forgotten. I was just looking her up to see if she had retired or still in practice. Many doctors I know in my teens have not retired yet. I was going to recommend Dr. Blythe to a friends daughter of mine. Time is so precious. Thank you for being one of the Best Physicians ever.. many continued prayers to her husband & family.

Best friends in high school and college, we shared secrets and dreams. Maggie's dreams became her goals; her hard work and determination made their achievement possible. The long list of activities, organizations, honors for Margaret Jane Ballage in our school yearbook were predictive of her life of service, involvement, commitment. For me, I will remember her infectious smile, the mischievous twinkle in her eyes; wisdom beyond her years to give good counsel with compassion, always encouraging words. I am so thankful for knowing her.
To her loving family, Jim and I send our deepest sympathies for the loss of a star so bright too soon dimmed.

Dr. Blythe was our special needs daughter's adolescent medicine physician. She always took time to visit with our daughter during her appointments. Our daughter loved her visits to the clinic to see "Dr. Maggie and Nurse Alyce."
We moved from Indianapolis 5 years ago and it was a friend of mine who called and shocked me with the sad news today. Dr. Blythe will be missed by so many people...she certainly made a positive impact on our family's lives.
Our hearts mourn along with her family and the community.

My heart is broken as I search for words to express my condolences. Maggie, a close friend in high school, encouraged me to dream big and go to California to college. Although we only occasionally were able to reconnect, her enthusiasm and spirit were always uplifting. My sincere condolences to family and friends.
