I’m sorry for your loss. I recently helped my mother move her paintings around and she shared a sweet story. Mr Milby taught her art history in the late 60s. She purchased one of his paintings. She has moved this painting with her to many homes.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I recently was helping my mother move her paintings around and she shared a story about Mr Milby. He taught her art history in the late 60s and she purchased one of his paintings. It has moved with her all these years. She has great memories of his class.

It's always great to remember a great older brother, and the memories of others being sent from time to time are sweet and comforting. Thanks to Ron recently and others who have shared. We really do miss him! Younger brother, Phil.

This woodcut of David's was an example of his generosity.

Mr. Milby was my art instructor at PSU Abington. I absolutely loved going to his classes just for our lengthy chats about cars and art. He was a genuine person with a great heart and great advice. I think about him from time to time and the impression he left on my artistic skills and thinking. I remember he showed me a book about his artwork and I was blown away. His work and teachings really inspired me to be less uptight about what I was working on. He taught my brother as well and I know he too had a great affinity for Mr. Milby. I wish I could still have another chat with him. He was a rarity in this world, very kind and warm with others, and always willing to help. Very sad to hear of his passing. My apologies for the late condolences.

David was one of my first art teachers at PCA night school back in 1971. He was a really wonderful and inspiring teacher and a warm, sincere person. The world needs more people like David. God bless his family and his spirit.

David was kind enough to let me stay over in his studio apartment on Filbert St. when I first came to Philadelphia in the late sixties to accept a graduate school scholarship to the Philadelphia College of Art. I had a few days to check out the city and the schools facilities. Although David wasn't around I got a preview of his personality and life style through his art work and the organization of his apartment and belongings. His neatness and orderliness were as impressive as that I had experienced while in the Army.
David was already friends with a number of other artists who were graduates of the Cleveland Institute of Art like myself. Over the years we shared many good times together at openings and parties some of which were held at his studio there on Filbert.
These were some of our mutual friends: Gerald Herdman, Bennett Lorber, Charles Yates, John Taylor, Piero Dorazio, Natvar Bhavsar, and many others. We shared many stimulating and happy times together.
The David I knew was warm, engaging, quick to smile, and attentive. He was very thoughtful, very smart, with an excellent sense of humor.
Our friendship thinned with my relocation to CA in the late eighties but I still retain vivid memories of shared experiences from our "early years". For a few years John Maruskin, (another Cleveland Artist) and myself were tenants of a three story apartment builiding David owned in South Philadelphia.
David was an excellent landlord.
Attached is a small painting (40 inches wide or so) I gave David many years ago.

Rosemary,
I was shocked and sad to hear of David's death. I was happy to hear that he died at home. I hope he did not suffer. Death is so hard under any circumstances. I wish you tenderness and peace.

David Milby was my Good Samaritan on more than one occasion. I've missed him these last several years. May God bless sweet Rosemary and Andrew as only He can.
