GEORGE CONNELL Obituary

CONNELL
GEORGE W., JR. "MALLET"

57, of Chestnut Hill. Son of George W. Connell, and the late Binney W. Nast, died Nov. 11, 2018. Several family members and friends were by his side.
George was a graduate of The William Penn Charter School and received his BA from Denison University where he was a standout player on both the Varsity Soccer and Baseball teams.
George also served his country for 6 years as a member of the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry of The Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
In addition to his father, George is survived by his children, George III (Geordie), Mary (Mimi), and Lucy, his sisters, Binney (Missy) Wietlisbach and Elizabeth (Lisa) Hughes, his brothers James (Jimmy) Connell, Alexander (Alex) Connell, Justin (JB) Nast, Jeffery Nast and his devoted and loving partner, Maria Squicciarini, who was his true love for the last many years of his journey.
George was enthusiastic about finance, sports and music, particularly live music, and pursued them passionately and with great fun and success. He spent his entire career in financial services working for firms including Kidder Peabody & Co, Rittenhouse Financial Services, The Bryn Mawr Trust Co. and his own firm, Washington Investment Consultants. He was a member of Gulph Mills Golf Club where he was a 2-time Club Champion and 2018 winner of The Harrison Cup while in the midst of his battle with cancer. He was also a member of The Merion Cricket Club, The Racquet Club of Philadelphia, The Philadelphia Club, and The Misquamicut Club of Watch Hill, RI. In addition to his success on the golf course, he loved the sports of Racquets, Court Tennis and Cricket and traveled routinely, playing in tournaments and matches throughout the country. He loved music of all kinds. His first Grateful Dead concert certainly was a defining experience in his life. He often spoke about how welcoming the older Dead fans were to him as a kid, which hooked him on the band as much as the music, and which was a precursor to the concept of "radical inclusion" that he came to embrace in recent years.
He was also an avid mountain climber, scaling peaks in Nepal as well as Mt. Whitney in California and was very proud of checking off his one bucket list item, scaling Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
A private memorial service will be held for immediate family. A celebration of George's life for all friends and family will be held on Friday Nov. 16 at 12:30 P.M. at Gulph Mills Golf Club. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in his name to Philabundance, 3616 South Galloway Street, Philadelphia, PA 19148.

I just learned of Mallet's passing. I was a classmate of his at Montgomery Country Day School and Penn Charter. He was a strong personality and left a great impression. I know he is missed by all who knew him. God bless.

It is shocking that a year has gone by so quickly without George Jr. here to enjoy life on earth. I know he is watching over his family and friends, smiling and golfing and playing other sports in spirit with those he cared about at the clubs he adored. I know this must have been a terribly difficult year for his family who have had to learn to live without his physical presence. To those who loved him again I am sorry for your very painful loos of your son, brother, father, companion, friend. May he rest in peace and may your pain over his loss be lessened in the days to come. He will always be remembered and missed by family and friends but I hope that his family will find the strength to persevere in his absence.

George and I had an immediate connection through the first city troop. My father was a trooper. The first time George came into my office he saw the silver troop plate on my wall and asked who the trooper was. God bless him, his loved ones and I thank him for his friendship, love, loyalty. An amazing person. He was a good person in so many ways. I will miss u George.

I just learned about George's death. He will be missed! He and I served together for many years in the First City Troop and we battled it out on the squash court. Furthermore, our fathers were close friends. George was someone I always greatly admired and someone I always made a point to stop to talk to him whenever we were at a party or event together. He often had a smile on his face and his laugh was memorable and true welcomed sight. On behalf of my family, we extend our deepest condolence for the entire Connell family. I know it is a painful time but his memory will be forever carried in all of us. - Jamie Coates

To the Connell Family and Maria, I met George when he was at BMT and became a friend and investment adviser to my brother. They bonded over their illnesses and George's kindness when my brother passed was so appreciated. I am shocked and deeply saddened to learn that he has passed. He was a fine man who will be missed by so many. My sincerest condolences.

My deepest sympathies to George Jr.'s immediate family, and to his father, George Sr., and his wife,Sue, and George Jr.'s siblings. I am very sad to learn of his passing. He was always a welcoming and friendly, charming, and outgoing fellow to all he met.It was always fun to see him at the Devon Horse Show Art Gallery kick off party in recent years, supporting the Arts and the Horse Show. This is a very sad loss of one too young to go and he will be missed by many people.

My God, I just saw Mallet at Suburban Station a month or so ago... had no idea that he was battling a malady. I still have vivid memories of our Thanksgiving football games where we would hike the balk to each of our kids and then as they ran past us for a touchdown, we would all fall down. They, of course, loved it! George, my heart goes out to you...having just lost one of mine, I know the pain you are in. God Bless. Tony

Great advice, often heard from Mallet.

I met George 2 years ago at White Manor County Club through his good friend Jeff for a practice round for the Philadelphia Senior Amateur. We hit it off immediately and he asked me to be his regular caddy for area events. I can honestly say in a short amount of time he became such a good FRIEND. We had so many laughs together and went to so many different courses together and I enjoyed the honor of being on his bag. I was so happy for him and his golf partner Jeff when we won the Harrison Cup despite his failing health. I will miss you beyond belief George and it was an honor being your caddy!! God bless you and your family!

When I was the Executive Vice President of Wealth Management at Bryn Mawr Trust, George was one of my most helpful officers, and he also went out of his way to introduce me to many interesting people on the Mainline. We shared the same Christian faith, and values. I will miss him.

George was a lover of life. Whether it was at a concert or on the golf ocourse or taking about his children he was 100% locked in. I hope all the fond memories help you find comfort in this truly difficult time. He was taken way too soon but he certainly put in ba lot of living in the time he had. Rest In Peace George.

First met George in 1979 playing golf for Episcopal and he was playing for Penn Charter. I think he beat me then and certainly many times after that! He was an institution at Gulph Mills and it will be sad not to see him hanging around the practice green. My thoughts and prayers for the family.

Met George 8 years ago at my first Phish show in Atlantic City, when Maria said "you have to meet George, you'll love him." And I did, for the next 8 years were filled with music, dinners, bbq, discussions about common wisdom and life. There was not a soul on the planet with whom he could not find a topic of conversation, and his kindness extended to everyone. He was, and will be remembered, as being so, so stupendous, in the words of one of our favorite songwriters.

George's locker was next to mine in the "double-secret" hidden upstairs locker room in the back of the main locker room at The Racquet Club, known to but a few, on the waiting list of many, with its own washroom and sofa, and tall lockers that actually locked. I got to know George better the past few years in our little "club within a club," occasionally playing squash, and occasionally having drinks after squash ... whether or not we actually played. George was always fun, but would want to be remembered as a loving father first. Save a space for me in the big locker room, George. - Tom

Kind thoughts are with the Family at this very difficult time. May your fond memories bring you comfort and God's promise at Jeremiah 29:11,12 will give you strength.

I met George when he would come to his fathers office at Drexel firestone/burnham (I worked with his father)back in the 70s and sometimes at Frankie Clemens when he would sit in a booth in the back and do his homework. He loved being around people especially if they were talking about money.
Our paths crossed again while at the Bryn Mawr trust company. He was very upbeat and loved life to the fullest.
May you find peace and comfort George, Maria and family as he was loved and admired by all.
