A life well lived
Joseph Poppy Fadigan (b. Aug 27, 1928), passed away suddenly in his home late morning Saturday October 26th in the arms of his oldest son, Joe Fife and with his youngest daughter, Jennifer at his bedside. Grandchildren Kelsey and Colin were also in the house nearby. Happily he had come down earlier in the morning to enjoy a butterscotch Krimpet Tastykake before he returned to his bedroom where he subsequently collapsed, not able to be revived.
Many family and long-time friends gathered at the house into the night to cry, eat, drink and make merry with tales of times gone by. It was both sad and wonderful and Poppy would have appreciated every moment of it.
Poppy was one of 4 brothers and sisters growing up near 6th & York in Philadelphia. He often told tales of adventures in his neighborhood -- convincing friendly lifeguards to let him and 6 of his buddies into the pool for the price of 1 or hopping a streetcar to get to the park. By age 16 he was working at the Navy Yards and eventually served in the Signal Corps for the U.S. Army during the Korean War stationed at Fort Meade in Maryland as an expert in Morse Code and continuous wave signaling.
He met his wife Joan Kennedy at a dance club in Germantown. After a long and determined courtship, they married October 13, 1956. Together they built a home where multitudes of friends and neighbors gathered for parties and celebrations as they raised their family. He was active with the Roxborough Eagles and a fixture at the field for many years as a volunteer and coach
Sadly Joan died in September of 1983 leaving Poppy with his 6 children age 10 and older. They all pitched in and formed a strong bond coming together over the years for many barbecues and family dinners.
Poppy grew a garden most years to make tasty vegetable side dishes for their Irish meat and potatoes dinners. His sauces and pickles would last into winter to bring the summer freshness to their table. Every Sunday for decades he would come home from mass at IHM to make what his kids delightedly call Poppy eggs which includes a Philly favorite scrapple with over easy-eggs. He played chess and even traveled for tournaments. The soundtrack of his life was based on the vocal stylings of the best singer ever Frank Sinatra.
In recent years his memory was declining so his cooking got more basic, but, with son Joey by his side he still tirelessly made potatoes and carrots several times a week.
His heart was in decline and his memory was failing, but his last few years were a true blessing. He loved his home and family. He was very proud to have created a household where he could be surrounded by generations of his family and sneak treats to Moose his grand-daughter's bulldog. Having Joey on hand 24/7 gave everyone peace of mind and increased his comfort and safety. Having Jen, Kels and Colin around meant he was never alone and greatly reduced his anxiety. He was almost always pleased to see visitors. Jeff came by several times a week for grocery runs and to bring special treats like apple pies, Tastykakes and bananas. Johnny came often to sit and watch sports and chat about the old days. Jim and Sharon stopped in to help with meds and paperwork. Kaelyn, his oldest grandchild, checked in frequently for both social and health care support.
He keenly felt the passing of many of his old friends from the family, neighborhood, church and local VFW Post where he was an active member for many years, but unlike many older peoples these days, he was never alone or isolated.
After a hip operation in 2015 he told his children he never wanted to leave his home for a hospital again. He got to go on his own terms in his own bedroom with his family around him. We should all be so blessed.
It was very sad to see him go, but I feel honored to have known him.
