Joanne Druery Obituary

Joanne Megali Druery Joanne Megali Druery, of Bluffton and wife of Bart J. Druery III for 57 wonderful years, passed away at the Medical University of SC in Charleston on November 28, 2017. Joanne was born in New York City on March 22, 1940 to the late Samuel Megali and Mary Colaneri Megali and grew up in Queens, NY. Joanne was a graduate of St. John's University where she made lifelong friends as an active member of Kappa Phi Beta. She earned her masters at Columbia University; spent many years as an educator, a facilitator for Verizon Education Programs, and a partner in Bart's software consulting business. Joanne was an enthusiastic volunteer founder and editor of The Village Voice monthly newspaper in Dix Hills, NY where she raised her family and built an active community. She retired to Sun City and co-chaired the Chatterton Golf Classic for many years which raised over $250K for local charities. Joanne cherished her family and friends and all were welcome around her table. Her great gift was her ability to create incredible dinner parties, Sunday pool parties, Fluckingham Olympics, golf socials, neighborhood block parties, mah jongg evenings, and Orange Lake pasta parties. Joanne lit up a room with her energy, humor, knack for telling stories, and making everyone feel special. Her favorite saying was 'If you want something done give it to a busy person' (and 'everything tastes better in Waterford stemware'). Joanne traveled worldwide but her favorite place was at home watching a movie, holding hands with Bart. In addition to her beloved husband, Joanne is survived by her son, Bart J. Druery IV of Ridge, NY; her daughter, Danielle Druery Duplin (John Edward) of Melrose, MA; her brother, Philip Megali (Kathy) of West Hempstead, NY; her sister-in-law Aideen Finnegan Fraser (Doug Fraser) of Douglaston, NY; and her granddaughters, Alexandra Druery Duplin and Sophia Druery Duplin of Melrose, MA in whom Joanne's strength, positivity, and passion for life shine on. The family will receive friends on Saturday Dec 2nd, from 1:00 pm till 7:00 pm ; with a Celebration of Life at 2:00 pm; at the family home where Joanne loved to entertain. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society in honor of Joanne M. Druery. Photos and stories of Joanne are also deeply appreciated by the family as we know she touched so many lives.

So many treasured memories - Planning Mom and Dad's 25th anniversary in your backyard in Dix Hills, sharing the news with you we were pregnant with Bobby, setting up Patrice's bridal shower in the villa at Orange Lake (candelabra on the table and all), your enthusiasm in cheering me on as a new golfer, all the wonderful weekends on the boat in Lake Winnepesaukee. I could go on and on but that which I think I will cherish most were the late night conversations (just us girls) after cleaning up yet another gathering in Florida. So beautiful Joanne, both inside and out.

Thinking of the pool parties, trips to the ski house, Christmas caroling by the "white gates",lobster bakes and watching Mrs. Druery play amazingly long games of scrabble. What wonderful childhood memories! All injected with love laughter and adventure with Mrs. Druery directing! My heart is sad for her loss and for all that loved and knew her!

To Joanne's family and friends,
Though I only knew your loved one for a short while, her obituary describes who I got to know. My deepest
sympathy to each member of her family and to each of her friends, especially the longtime ones who I have had the pleasure to get to know.
Cherish only the wonderful memories and good times and those will sustain you as you grieve.
