Joseph Lindner Obituary

Joseph Lindner, Jr., MD Dr. Joseph (Joe) Lindner died on July 22, 2018. He was born April 5, 1929 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a graduate of Asheville School, Asheville, NC and Dartmouth College and received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and interned at Cincinnati General Hospital where he met Doris, his wife-to-be. Dr. Joe served in the US Navy for 2 years during the doctors draft program after which he returned to Cincinnati and completed his residency in Internal Medicine. He was asked to join the faculty and became a full professor as well as Assoc. VP for Medical Affairs in addition to private practice associated with the Department of Internal Medicine. During his career, he initiated the first residency program in Emergency Medicine which began at the University of Cincinnati. In 1978, Dr. Joe earned his Masters degree in Public Health from Harvard University and in 1979 became president and CEO of St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston, NJ and retired in 1995 to Hilton Head Island where he was a member of Bear Creek Golf Club. He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Dr. Doris Beatty Lindner, and his loving daughters, Laura Sankey (Kevin) and Karen Pappas (Tom) as well as his grandchildren whom he adored: Logan, Nolan, Colton, Teddy and Charlotte. He is also survived by other wonderful family members, friends and colleagues. He loved life, his family and many friends and was usually the life of the party. Dr. Joe was also an adventurer, who with Doris, sampled the "best" hamburger in all 50 states. Dr. Joe was a faithful Christian and was an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church. Dr. Joe has donated his body to MUSC where even in death he continues to serve and provide the opportunity for others to learn. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head on September 8 at 1 PM. Doris,

I had the pleasure of serving with Joe on the Asheville School Board of Trustees for many years. He was a wonderful man and my life was enriched from knowing him...he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
